Round 2

Friday 31/03/2023

Norwood Flames vs West Adelaide Bearcats (The ARC – The Firedome)

Women (6:30pm)

The fire alarm isn’t going off just yet for the Flames but there are some alarming signs after being dismantled by the Sabres last Sunday. Likely to miss Ally Wilson for the second week in a row due to Australian 3×3 commitments – they will need to find a winner against a Bearcats team that looked good for its first hit out. Sharni Thompson was terrific with 22 points in her first hit out but is battling an ankle injury coming into tonight’s contest and Alek Akuen grabbed a double double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. The player to take the next step could be Annika Uzcategui-Montenegro who stepped up into the starting five last week. The Bearcats were challenged solidly by the Warriors but rallied through their perimeter shooters from the pine including Keeley Pearce and Annaliese Watkinson who dropped six of seven between them – and that’s why the red and black will win this one comfortably…

Key Stat – The Bearcats shot 48 percent from beyond the arc (10/21) – the best clearly in Round one.

COD Prediction: Bearcats by 21 points

Men (8:15pm)

For two teams I thought might be around each other in 2023 – it did not quite go the way even I expected. The inclusion of Jack Stanwix from the Hobart Chargers looks like a tick with 22 points and Moses Nuangki showed he might rise to a new level with eleven points and eight rebounds. It might be youth watch for the Flames in 2023 with Alex Dodson lodging eight points in ten minutes. The Bearcats had first up gelling issues against their western rivals in the Warriors and I imagine another week of full training together will help define the roles. It could be a daunting prospect for the Flames with McCarron, Drmic, De Santis and Spear ready to do some big damage – and I think a first convincing win for the Bearcats is likely to happen…

Key Stat – The Bearcats had 15 turnovers last week – can’t see them giving up that many again.

COD Prediction: Bearcats by 30 points

Saturday 1/04/2023

Woodville Warriors vs Central District Lions – (St Clair – The Castle)

Women (6:30pm)

It was a solid showing from Glenn Shaw’s Warriors first up showing some promising signs – namely that they’ve got a good one in Nicole Fransson as an import. Fransson grabbed a double double of 18 points and 10 rebounds and looks a real player for the league in 2023. Naomi Allotey got plenty of opportunity to show her all-round game and it was successful first hit out for Chloe Purvis. The Lions equally showed some quality signs and hung with a Mansfield led Rockets but should hopefully get some reinforcements back to support Imani Guy (25 points and eight rebounds) and Jayden De La Cerda (20 points, eight assists and seven rebounds). Looking after the basketball is key for both these teams averaging 20 turnovers each for the round – you feel the Lions have the better ball handlers however I will take the home-side in what’s bound to be a very close ball game.

Key Stat – Both teams were last in ball security conceding an average of 21 turnovers and giving up 21 assists in 2022 – whoever can nail this category down is going to go furthest in 2023.

COD Prediction: Warriors by 2 points

Men (8:15pm)

The Warriors men were clicking with a first up victory over the Bearcats – showing some key moments in the final term that defined their game. Riley Meldrum and Jawan Stepney made key plays down the stretch and highlights the continuity they have. The Lions showed glimpses of brilliance making a bright start with Brandon Jenkins living up to his hype from last season with 29 points, five rebounds and four steals and new import Kevin Baker notched a “Baker’s dozen” with 10 points and 11 rebounds. If they are to challenge the Warriors though – they will need Sunday Bol and Kalani Sapwell to make double figures. For me thre Warriors just have too much continual firepower that keeps coming at you and rim protection to let this one slip.

Key Stat – The Warriors got plenty from their pine 34 points in all so when you have Dev McGee leading Ben Janssen and Tyrone McLennan – emulating that 95 point average per game is achievable once again

COD Prediction: Warriors by 15 points

Eastern Mavericks vs Southern Tigers – (St Francis De Sales – The Shooting Gallery)

Women (6:30pm)

The Mavs women were highly competitive for a half before the Panthers dropped them away in the third 21-9. Its Olivia Bradley’s young team right now which is saying something, Taylah Levy looked the goods at the point and import Jannon Otto while still settling in limited minutes provided some interior presence. The Tigers took some time to warmup, but my goodness did they come home in a rush with a 28-point last quarter driven by Mollie McKendrick (26 points, 12 rebounds and six assists) but also a few new faces. Watch out for Brittany Hernandez and her handles and moves finishing with 15 points and six rebounds and Bianca Stasinowsky who had a great second half when the home side needed it. The Tigers were missing some key pieces last week so if Morgan Yaeger is back at least with Martin to join soon – the Tigers should bounce back from their loss.

Key Stat – Un-Tiger like – Southern only scored 30 points in three quarters last week but the Mavs only dropped 31 points at the same time before both teams scored 28 and 26 respectively…

COD Prediction: Tigers by 22 points

Men (8:15pm)

The Mavs were also pretty solid on debut with a newish lineup under coach Dan Wray and held their own against the Panthers for parts of the match. New import Jack Hemphill was impressive but foul trouble restricted his ability while still finishing with 26 points and nine rebounds. James Legan found Alex Starling a constant shadow and couldn’t hit the scoreboard as he liked but still added eight rebounds to his ten points – and that’s danger signs for a team he enjoys playing against. The Tigers were aerial early and up and about but the reality of the NBL1 landscape set in quickly for the young Tiges at the claws of the Eagles. Jett Thompson is still to find his feet, Green started strong but faded a little in his first game, but the spark of the night came from the 15 year old in Alex Dickeson with “the professor” nailing eight points in 13 minutes. While even on paper – I feel like the Mavs just have that bit more experience and in the battle of two rookie coaches the Mavs should keep their incredible Tigers winning streak going (despite wins very rare in the last five seasons) of three in a row.

Key Stat – Legan twice was the difference between the sides in 2022 in both elusive wins with 24 points and nine rebounds in Round 9 and 30 points in Round 18 – bound to be the same again…

COD Prediction: Mavericks by 3 points

Sturt Sabres vs South Adelaide Panthers – (Springbank – The Cave)

Women (6:30pm)

That was a strong start from the Sabres last Sunday who took over the contest in the second half – they blew away the Flames with 55 points courtesy of the return of young rising talent Tayla Brazel. Her game can be the differentiation for the Sabres in 2023 with 17 points, seven rebounds, fours steals and three assists and it was great to see a successful return from her long term ACL injury. The Panthers new pieces fit in immediately to their lineup for 2023 with Sam Defrancesco showing with Jade Johnson back – she’ll be a handy foil for the Panthers when they need some scoring punch. Ash “Splash” Spencer only played 14 minutes last week as well with the Panthers able to test their bench depth with Bianca McDonald also impressive with 12 points and nine rebounds. Both teams have plenty of depth and scoring down the stretch will be the key to winning this one – that’s where it’s been decided in the past. The Sabres looked the more in-tune early, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Panthers get the win either way.

Key Stat – The rebounding count will be a marker of impact with the Panthers grabbing 68 and the Sabres 54 with Forbes and Williams matchup pivotal in this contest.

COD Prediction: Sabres by 4 points

Men (8:15pm)

The intrigue around this Sabres lineup is what is this team going to be? They doused the Flames last round with impressive first up showings from one of the quietly kept signings of the off season in Cactus Tbilisi Euro league guard Jordan Forbes (19 points, five rebounds and assists) and Tobias Dowdell (17 points). Jack Turnbull was firing them from everywhere again but the first true test comes against the Panthers. The Panthers did their business as expected led by the grand final MVP Starling who once again is the key to stop. The Sabres have to stop him if they are to win this one – but who can from the current lineup.

Key Stat – There’s no Joel Spear to stop Starling this time with the Sabres holding him to 14 in their first encounter and when he wasn’t there – it was 21 points in their loss last season.

COD Prediction: Panthers by 11 points

Forestville Eagles vs North Adelaide Rockets (Wayville – The Nest) – Kayo Game of the Week

Women (3:00pm)

No Borlase was no worries for the Eagles but a much tougher test awaits this week with the Mansfield-less Rockets. One of the big observations I made calling the Eagles last week was the impact of Katia Stamatelopoulos who influenced the game at both ends with an all-rounded eight points, ten rebounds, five assists and steals. While Rach Hines is the gun of this team after a solid time as a development player at the Adelaide Lightning – Maddy Freer got the momentum going at the start with seven points in a low scoring tied half of 21-21 between them and the Tigers.

The Rockets look like they’ve got all the pieces this year with one I anticipate will suit up this weekend in late signing in Mansfield’s teammate Brooke Basham. Basham’s inclusion will be intriguing in a team that shared the ball around to find its offensive kick and if Bash catches on while picking her lightning shot – look out everyone. With her likely inclusion I think the Rockets will grab two in a row and set themselves up for Mansfield’s return in the coming weeks.

Key Stat – The Rockets dished 20 assists created by Mansfield and Lauren Badenoch (seven) setting up their game – watch with interest if those numbers can remain the same with B & B serving up for Jordan Freer, Corrigan and Meyer.

COD Prediction: Rockets by 15 points

Men (4:45pm)

Both teams had the perfect opening game to shake the cobwebs off preseason – the Eagles and Rockets both putting away the Tigers and Lions respectively. Andy Simons’ team were comprehensive through the Melbourne United version of Malith Machar who looked stronger, quicker and more athletic than last years version. Greg Mays and Jake Rios did the damage too minus Adam Doyle who should return this week. The Rockets under Mikey Rogers were potent with new faces Durrell McDonald (17 points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists) and Akech Aliir (21 points, seven rebounds and three assists) most impressive. Riley Harrap was the one though with 31 points including five of ten beyond the perimeter, with six rebounds and three assists that really made this Rockets team one to watch closely in 2023. Both teams have plenty of ability at both ends of the floor – I’ll take the home side in a close one in what is bound to be one of the games of the weekend.

Key Stat – The Rockets and Eagles last season were number one and two in rebounding – they both had 51 and 52 respectively.

COD Prediction: Eagles by 1 point

Round 2 – Waatu eclipsed by Sunshine Coast in St Clair debut

Round two for the UBL concluded with the Waatu having two highly competitive matches against the Queensland university of Sunshine Coast (USC) with both teams missing key players – some familiar and new faces stepped up into the spotlight.

The "Waatu" remained competitive in both contests but ultimately USC found what they needed to close out both games in the final stanza. Photo supplied by Adelaide University Sport/Picture IT Sports Photography

Taylor made performance from Sunshine wanes off Waatu

The Waatu Women put in a second competitive effort in a row as they went down to USC 55-64 at the St Clair Recreation Centre.

USC guard Jess Johnston (Paramedic Science) continued her strong start to the season with 19 points, nine rebounds and seven assists but it was also her centre Brooke Taylor (Recreation and Outdoor Sport) who had a standout stat line. Her five points, nine rebounds and six blocks-controlled air traffic around the basket in a game littered with second chance opportunities – with the Waatu rallying multiple times to run their way back into the contest.

Jess Johnston (middle) split the difference between the sides despite the efforts of Evie Lovell (left) and Tiara Hatchard (right). Photo supplied by Adelaide University Sport/Picture IT Sports Photography

The Waatu went on several 7-0 runs and even produced a 12-2 run in the second quarter to close the margin driven by skipper Evie Lovell (PHD in Medicine) with 14 points and four steals and Tiara Hatchard (Physiotherapy) with 11 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Co-skipper Jo Harris (Civil Engineering) also kept the Waatu in the game with her effort on the glass with 11 rebounds including 10 offensive to pair with her four points and three steals. The Waatu have shown encouraging signs under coach Jawan Stepney with Scarlett Miles (Law and PPE) stringing together another solid game with seven points and 14 rebounds but foul trouble hampered her impact on the game in the final quarter – which slowed down the Waatu’s comeback.

Hunt steps up despite USC Campbell clinic

A highly entertaining game of UBL came from unlikely sources however the Waatu couldn’t reel in a clinical Campbell led USC 71-85 at the St Clair Recreation Centre

Toby Campbell (Education and Outdoor Recreation) was a dominant force with a double double of 20 points at 54 percent and 17 rebounds along with Callum Parsons (Sports & Exercise) with 11 points and 12 rebounds who eventually held off the Waatu.

Despite Lachie Hunter, Steve Parfitt and Nic Fassos missing – Fassos NBL1 teammates in Toby Hunt (Mechanical Engineering) and Harry Reemst (Chemical Engineering) along with Eddie Steele (Civil Engineering) stepped up to the plate. Hunt dropped a career high 25 points and five rebounds while Reemst was efficient with 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists. It was Steele who added some metal to the Waatu with 19 points including five triples for 60 percent from the field. The Waatu gave up 22 offensive rebounds which the Sunshine Coast converted to 19 of their points and proved the difference statistically in the match.

Toby Hunt stepped up into the Sunshine Coast’s shadow and provided plenty of headaches with a career high 25 points. Photo supplied by Adelaide University Sport/Picture IT Sports Photography

Both Waatu teams hit the road this week for the first time in 2023 as they head to Ballarat Tuesday to play the Federation University Falcons then Wednesday to play new team the Australian Catholic University (ACU).

RD 2 Women AU Waatu 55 (Lovell 14, Hatchard 11, Haigh, Miles 7) defeated by USC 64 (Johnston 19, Fleming 12, Whittet 8)

RD 2 Men AU Waatu 71 (Hunt 25, Steele 19, Reemst 15) defeated by USC 85 (Campbell 20, R Morris 14, S Morris 13, Parsons 11, Fullarton 8)

2023 NBL1 Central Round 1 Preview

Round 1

Saturday 25/03/2023

Central District Lions vs North Adelaide Rockets (Starplex – The Den)

Women (6:30pm)

It’s a new year with returning coach Joe Noone having a big chance to make an impression early in the season with a first up home game to set the tone for the season. Jayden De La Cerda will be a challenging matchup for any opposition and the new recruits in Imani Guy and Tiahna Sears really add to the stocks of the Lions. On the flip side the Rockets have recruited well and there will still be intrigue if Lauren Mansfield makes it back in time from 3×3 Australia camp – so much will fall onto new import centre Erica Meyer.

Key Stat – The last time Centrals beat North Adelaide was pre 2015 – nearly 8 years ago…

COD Prediction: Rockets by 6 points

Men (8:15pm)

New coaches for both sides and different focuses with the Lions looking to build on their youth development by complementing their lineup and the Rockets looking to relaunch back into finals contention aggressive in the trading market. Brandon Jenkins was huge the last time they met in 2022 with 20 points as was Riley Harrap for the Rockets with 19 points and seven rebounds. Covering the absence of Jamar Akoh is key who was important in both fixtures last year – with new import Donoven Carlisle likely to cover that position I expect the Rockets to have just enough depth to get the win.

Key Stat – The Rockets in 2022 were ninth in average scoring with 79.2 points and the Lions were the same with 90.1 points per game in points conceded.

COD Prediction: Rockets by 10 points

South Adelaide Panthers vs Eastern Mavericks – (MPSC – The Jungle)

Women (6:30pm)

A fitting opening fixture for both sides with South Adelaide Panthers four-time halls medallist Vikki Kelson taking charge of the visiting Mavs. While we won’t learn too much about how much impact the additions of DeFrancesco, Troia and Gibbons – getting off to a winning start should be the priority for Richard Dickel. However with not much intel on new import for the Mavs Jannon Otto – I’d say this will be pretty close till halfway through the third before the Panthers experience and depth takes over.

Key Stat – The Mavs were second in turnovers in 2022 with 21.2 per game with key point guards Kaila Gabriel, Allie Garcia, Emily Dawe averaging 10 games for the season. Taylah Levy at the point is a huge in for the Mavs.

COD Prediction: Panthers by 17 points

Men (8:15pm)

Unveiling the championship banner and a former Panther gets his shot in Daniel Wray are the subplots of this one. My chief worry for the Mavs against the defending champs is how they guard Daniel Johnson and Alex Starling. Jordan Robertson and new import Jack Hemphill are going to have their hands full in the paint with those two no doubt. Unveiling the championship banner can be fraught with danger and even with a former Panther standing at the other end – I think the Panthers take this one comfortably.

Key Stat – The Mavs were eighth in three point shooting and with Legan, Rentoy, Ciabattoni and Raneburg off the pine – we should see more production from the outer from Wray’s men.

COD Prediction: Panthers by 21 points

Southern Tigers vs Forestville Eagles – (Morphett Vale – The Cage)

Women (6:30pm)

The Tigers women have gone bang this week on the recruiting front and while they won’t have all their pieces – they are starting to emerge as a dark horse for the 2023 championship. They have made a change as announced this week with power forward Brittany Hernandez replacing Julie Brosseau and their point guard import is bound to be confirmed in the coming days but their agency has also confirmed their signing. The Eagles main problem in 2023 will be utilising their best lineup when they have it. Izzy Borlase is no doubt the recruit of the upcoming winter however there will be stages where given the player she is – will be called up to higher honours. To note Opal’s training camp at the AIS is between March 31 and April 5 so whether the Eagles have access to Borlase before or after camp plays a big role in how the Eagles play this Saturday. They still have Rachel Hines and the Brett’s but even with mystery surrounding the Eagles lineup for Saturday night – I think the Tigers might sneak this one in one of the games of the round.

Key Stat – Yaeger played just the 15 games in 2022 and clearly had some injury issues. They need her to play majority of this season to control the tempo and flow of games.

COD Prediction: Tigers by 4 points

Men (8:15pm)

Rookie versus one of the regulars when Scott Freer’s new side clashes with a strong squad of the Eagles led by Andy Simons. The combination of Jimma Dau, Fabian Johnson and Anthony Green will be intriguing to watch against the familiar names of Doyle, Machar, Rios on return, Mays and Owen Hulland. It looks like from a personnel point of view the Eagles have the balance right this time around and we should get a first good look at it. I think the Eagles might take this one comfortably – but the Tigers are going to be fun to watch in the mens this year.

Key Stat – The balance of last year’s Eagles lineup reminded me of the big heavy Melbourne Tigers of the mid-2000s lineup – that showed up in the stats with the Eagles number one in the league for rebounds (47.3) however they also allowed opponents to shoot within eight feet 42.5 percent and gave up 73.9 attempts per game compared to the team that unravelled them in the Panthers 67.4.

COD Prediction: Eagles by 16 points

West Adelaide Bearcats vs Woodville Warriors – (Port Adelaide Rec Centre – The Bearcat Cave)

Women (6:30pm)

The scary thing about this opening wild west showdown at the Bearcat Cave – the reigning champion won’t be at their absolutely best. There are still many moving pieces over at Port Adelaide whereas the Warriors coincidently at least have their pieces in place for the first half of the season. You can expect to see familiar faces like Fejo, Langenbrinck, Brenton and Pearce but also the additions of Coleman, Genna Anderson, Simmons and shooting gun Annaliese Watkinson. The Warriors lineup carries plenty of former Rockets with Allotey and Calvert likely to make appearance alongside other NBL1 names such as Chelsea Apacible and Serena Waters joining Katherine Perkas and Emily Winter. The final piece is in place with 6’2 Canadian Nicole Fransson available for Saturday which will make a huge difference to the outcome of this one – but with that in mind I think the reigning champs will be a little bit too strong in this one.

Key Stat – The Bearcats championship formula was built on being the number one rebounding team in the league with 51 per game, scoring team with 79.4 and assist queens with 21.3 per game. They also dropped 46 percent of their shots from inside the paint.

COD Prediction: Bearcats by 14 points

Men (8:15pm)

Both teams had a cracking set of clashes despite the ladder position and now with both teams slated for the top five – its going to go to another level. Bearcats have added some magic in the form of Northside Wizards McCarron and Drmic who I’m sure you already knew were Adelaide 36ers however you can also add a current rookie in Fraser Roxburgh and a former rookie in Joel Spear to that list. On paper Nyberg’s Bearcat team looks strong and has plenty of experience but the Warriors despite some key losses of Wurm, Boonstoppel and all-star five player Humphries – have plenty of continuity with “special J” Stepney and Jackson, Meldrum, Maiorana and of course Osborne. Defence is where this game comes down to early in the season with both teams looking to make shots at either end of the floor. I think the Warriors have had a little more time together and will get the win in this one as the Bearcats continue to gel – but it only take Drmic and DeSantis to go off for it to turn around the other way…

Key Stat – The Bearcats lacked firepower in 2022 averaging 80.5 points per game with the Warriors number two in the league with 95.6.

COD Prediction: Warriors by 5 points

Sunday 26/03/2023

Norwood Flames vs Sturt Sabres (The ARC – The Firedome)

Women (11:00am)

All is going to be revealed for the Flames who seem to have had an “interesting” off season. Exodus of key players, late signings and decisions have been made right at the eleventh hour and still we won’t know the true extent as to how that affects the outcome. It appears Ally Wilson leads the charge for this Flames teams with Demi Skinner and Sharni Thompson needing big games weekly to keep this side up near the top – time will tell if the next generation of youth can make it through at the ARC. The Sabres meanwhile seem solid, with plenty of continuity and armed with dangerous returning players like Tayla Brazel and of course the Halls medallist brilliant Mikayla Williams. I think the Sabres just have had more time together to understand what they want to do and will take them in this one.

Key Stat – The Halls medallist had one key deficiency in her game – shooting the mid-range at 26 percent and the three ball at 14 percent on one of seven attempts – watch out if she’s improved this area of her game.

COD Prediction: Sabres by 11 points

Men (12:45pm)

Similar to the Flames women – the men have also had their lineup shrouded in mystery. While we’ve seen the announcement of a potential star of Collin Smith and some familiar names like returning import Trey McBride, Seb Vozzo and Tom Goodall – some of the star power of previous Flames outfits seems at the moment to be lacking. The same can be said for the Sabres which this match looms as a battle of which team’s junior players can step-up to the plate. Look for names like Darcy McNamara, Robert Brennan and a guy who’s been around for a while that is having a red-hot preseason in Daniel Nash. For continuity and a game breaker in Jacob Rigoni – I think the Sabres get off to a winning start in the game of the week for Kayo.

Key Stat – The sixth placed Sabres of 2022 missed by the barest of margins as number five in the league for scoring, eight in free throws made (63 percent), fourth in score conceded and fifth in turnovers – changing these numbers via their lineup needs to be a priority if they are going to get back into the top contenders.
