For those new to the UBL league – The Adelaide University basketball team is all about the representation of South Australian basketball at the university national level. “Waatu” is Kaurna language for “coming together for a common goal” which essentially means they are the Adelaide University “Team of success, enjoyment and pride.”

Returning to the court this week – the Waatu commenced their second season with the third year of the league getting underway.

Roseby lights up for MU in Waatu return

The Waatu Men had a tough opening game this week as they ran into a lights out display from the University of Melbourne (MU) from beyond the arc in their 61-109 loss at the Wayville Sports Centre. A second quarter of 7-29 including a 19 point run across the first and second quarter from MU took all momentum away from the home side.

Clark Athletics state recruit Matt Roseby (Bachelor of Commerce) led the way for MU with 27 points including 7-9 from beyond the arc along with nine rebounds and was backed up by guard Josh McNally (Masters of Psychology) with 16 points (4-5 3pt). Cooper Eves (Dip Mathematical Science) dropped 13 in the second quarter to finish with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists and Mateja McKenzie (Bachelor of Science) dropped 17 points along with six rebounds and three assists. MU produced 18 points from turnovers and had 15 points on the fast break capitalising on the Waatu’s 15 turnovers.

The Waatu under new coach South Adelaide Panthers championship player Alex Starling were led by Captain and NBL1 Central player for the West Adelaide Bearcats Lachie Hunter (Civil Engineering) with 18 points and 11 rebounds and the Sturt Sabres Harry Reemst (Chemical Engineering) with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. The Waatu came out after halftime despite a heavy margin and won the third quarter in their highlight of the match 26-23. The Waatu will be looking to improve next week when they meet the University of Sunshine Coast (USC) at St Clair Recreation Centre on Tuesday.

Miles helps Waatu stay in it after Edwards onslaught early

A competitive first half was good signs for the Waatu Women who eventually fell to a potent University of Melbourne line-up 45-75 at the Wayville Sports Centre – with a scoreboard not reflective of the effort from the home side. The Waatu under returning coach of the Woodville Warriors Jawan Stepney were right in the contest at halftime thanks to the inclusion this season of the Forestville Eagles Scarlett Miles (Law and PPE) who helped them to a 26-37 margin at the half. The only difference was a brace of triples from MU’s Ariyel Edwards (Bachelor of Science) early in the first quarter that separated the two sides.

The third quarter was where MU grabbed the advantage as Eloise Leonard (Bachelor of Arts) stole her way to multiple opportunities with eight steals to go along side seven points and nine rebounds for her side as they took advantage 3-22 in the quarter. MU eventually overwhelmed the home side but not without a last quarter fight with the Waatu tying the scores for 16 apiece.

MU grabbed 25 points from turnovers to help their cause but both teams also created enormous second chance opportunities with a combined 44 offensive rebounds given up. Edwards finished with 17 points and five rebounds, Laura Hamilton (Bachelor Agricultural Science) had a terrific all-round game with 11 points, six assists and five rebounds and special mention goes to newcomer Meera Coburn (Bachelor of Commerce) who grabbed 16 rebounds to paired with seven points and two blocks.

The Waatu’s effort was led by newcomer Miles with 14 points and four rebounds and Port Pirie Patriot’s Tamika Reid (Bachelor of Arts) with nine points and four rebounds in an all-round effort from the squad. The Waatu will be looking to build on what they produced this week in the next round when they meet the University of Sunshine Coast (USC) at St Clair Recreation Centre on Tuesday.

Waatu Men sweep Carnabys and Falcons to jump into Four

The Waatu Men kept ABH Gym a fortress as they won both their home fixtures to jump into fourth place on the UBL table behind Sydney Tech, Sydney Uni and Victoria Uni.

That started with a solid 82-66 win over the Curtin Uni Carnabys led in coaching by 482 NBL game legend of the Perth Wildcats Ricky Grace off the back of a 28-18 start led by Lachy Hunter of the other red and black team of SA, the West Adelaide Bearcats. Hunter was unstoppable all week in a rich vein of form as he registered 28 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks. Toby Hunt had the first quarter dominance to setup the win with 11 points to finish with 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists while fellow Sabre Harry Reemst dished out 11 assists to go with his 10 point and 7 rebound double double. The Carnaby’s had two of their young NBL1 guns played very well for them in Perth Redbacks Lachlan Bertram (31 points and 5 rebounds) and Tobias Martin (19 points).

The Waatu then knocked off the Fed Uni Falcons 93-71 comfortably despite being led by 518 NBL game legend Ray Borner. Hunter again went hunting for the Waatu with 31 points and 19 rebounds (6 offensive) and a couple of thunderous dunk while Hunt fed much of Hunter with 10 assists and a 14 point double double. There were special contributions from backup players stepping up in Luke Mollett (9 points, 8 assists and rebounds), Jun Datario (16 points), Patrick Moriarty (10 points and 6 rebounds) and Sam Homburg (7 points and 12 rebounds). The 27 -14 second quarter setup the win with 18 points in the paint and 15 fast break points. Lachlan Drummond was best for the Falcons with 21 points and Connor Carey chalked up 8 points and assists.

The Waatu now sit 4th on the ladder heading into their next games against University of Melbourne and top four contender Victoria University…

Waatu Women fall just short of Falcons for First

Our women showed some quality basketball in patches and nearly were able to put it all together to get their first win of the season at ABH Gym. After sticking with them early 14-22, the Waatu were outdone by the Curtin Uni Carnabys 35-105. Tamika Reid was the most consistent throughout the match for the Waatu with 15 points and 12 rebounds along with Evie Lovell with 10 points in a team already missing Lateasha Lambert and Abby Lowman. The NBL1 weapons of the Carnabys were evident with Joondalup Wolves Akim Lual dropping 31 points and 7 rebounds, Perth Redbacks Shenae Hartree with 21 points at 64.3 percent and 11 rebounds dominated for the away side.

It was oh so close in the second game of the week as the women fell just short to the Fed Uni Falcons 60-65. Lovell was huge for the home side with 19 points and 6 assists while Josephine Harris had clearly her best hit out of the season with 14 points and 17 rebounds. The Waatu had the lead after three quarters and looked like they may be able to break their duck but the Falcons swooped defensively and on the back of a 3-15 last quarter were composed in the last minutes when it counted. The Falcons were led by Layla Iglesias with 19 points, 11 rebounds and 6 assists, Alison McMahon with 18 points and 12 rebounds and Elisa Pica with 14 points

The Waatu women will close out their season against University of Melbourne and Victoria University on the road next week with the first game a chance to grab that elusive win.

Waatu: “Coming together for a common goal for University Basketball”

This year is the second year of the University Basketball League (UBL) and South Australia has a representative team in the Mens and Womens competition. Here’s the wrap of the first four rounds of the UBL for the AU Waatu…

The name of the new Adelaide University basketball team says it all about the representation of South Australian basketball at the University national level. “Waatu” is Kaurna language for “coming together for a common goal” which essentially means they are the Adelaide University “Team of success, enjoyment and pride.”

And no doubt this is exactly what they have displayed so far in their first few games of the season…

Mens Waatu Rounds 1-3 (Away)

The Mens coached by Norwood Flames import Trey Mcbride have started reasonably well but could’ve been easily 2-2 heading into their inaugural homes games had it not been for USC Spartans dropping a 4-point play through Cooper Sparksman. The Mens grabbed a first win for the season in Round 1 against UWA Maali 92-71 with NBL1 Central’s Nick “Fassasin” Fassos scoring 26 points with 6 triples and 14 rebounds. Unfortunately they came up against two tough Sydney based teams in Uni of Sydney and Sydney Tech 54-98 and 48-96 respectively before dropping that close one to the Spartans 75-76. That left the Waatu 1-3 heading into their home fixtures against the Victorian teams of Latrobe (LTU Eagles) and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT Redbacks)

Womens Waatu Rounds 1-3 (Away)

The Womens coached by Woodville Warriors Jawan Stepney also nearly snuck as win in Round 1 against the UWA falling agonisingly close 60-62. Evie Lovell had 16 points, 5 steals and 3 rebounds in that one with a youthful team full of many Division 1 U23 Central District Lions players. Much like the Men the road trip to Sydney was extremely tough going down to Uni of Sydney 36-90 and Sydney Tech 29-77 then played the Spartans going down 55-108 but showing some positive signs coming into their home games despite the tough three games against strong lineups. That left the Waatu 0-4 heading into their home fixtures against the Victorian teams of Latrobe (LTU Eagles) and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT Redbacks).

Waatu Men complete inaugural opening week

The Waatu Men won their inaugural home games by first defeating the LTU Eagles 74-69 in a thriller at the ABH Gym (Adelaide Botanic High School Gym). NBL1 Central Sturt Sabres Toby Hunt dropped 8 points in the final quarter (10 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists) and sealed the game with an inbound steal to give the Waatu their second win of the season. Fellow Sabre Harry Reemst dropped 24 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists shooting 12/13 from the free throw line while West Adelaide Bearcat Lachy Hunter was big on the glass with 13 points, 8 rebounds (5 offensive) and 5 assists adding to the 18 total for the team. LTU were led by Troy Schaeche with 12 points and 6 assists and NBL1 South Eltham Wildcats Sam Trezise (11 points) and Christian Yammouni (10 points and 9 rebounds). The game also featured Ovie Magbegor for the Eagles of course the older brother of WNBL Championship Melbourne Boomer, WNBA and Australian Opal player Ezi however the Waatu did a good job curbing his game on the glass and scorecard keeping him to 6 points and 11 rebounds.

The Waatu backed it up the next day in the round with a solid win over the RMIT Redbacks 85-70. Hunt started where he left off to finish with a double double of 23 points and 11 rebounds along with 7 assists but the sharp shooting of Norwood Flames SDL player Nikolas Stefanovic was player of the match as he torched the Redbacks beyond the arc. Stefanovic finished with 20 points including 6/7 triples and broke the game open. Reemst was outstanding in his second game of the week as well with 23 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. The Redbacks captain and centre James Smith was hard to contain as he finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds while fellow VBL players Caleb Bruggerman (14 points and 6 rebounds) and Hayden Mitchell (12 points and 6 assists) kept the Redbacks in the contest.

The Waatu now sit 6th on the ladder heading into their next games…

Waatu Women work hard but Eagles and Redbacks prevail

Keen to make an impression in their opening game, the Waatu women were solid for the opening minutes until the LTU Eagles super star Meghan Stagoll took over to open up a sizeable lead for the away side and eventually the 3rd placed La Trobe ran away with it 42-120. The NBL1 South Eltham Wildcat Stagoll finished with 39 points with counterpart Jamie Weddle not too far behind with 14 points while giant Eilish Feehan caused problems on the glass for Stepney’s women. Evie Lovell continued her solid form to lead the home side with 15 points and forward Abby Lowman dropped 11 points.

A huge chance awaited in the second game the next day against the equally winless RMIT Redbacks and the Waatu gave a good account of themselves. At quarter time it was 11-18 with the Waatu minus guard Tiara Hatchard missing the remainder of the game due to a whack to the mouth. Enter SDL player Sophie Cardillo (15 points) who influenced the contest heavily along with Josie Harris and Tamika Reid who struck some long bombs to keep them in it. In the end the Redbacks bite on the rebounds through Sophie Owen (19 points and 13 rebounds) and their captain Ruth Burrows (13 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists) was too much as they closed the Women out 45-63 in the finish; but it was along with the Round 1 game one of the best performances of the season for the Women.

The Waatu will next play at home in Round 5 of the UBL April 26 and 27 against the Curtin University Carnabys and the Federation University Falcons at the ABH Gym at 2:00pm and 4:00pm and even though its early in their introduction into this national college style competition; there is definitely already some success, enjoyment and pride for these teams…
