NBL1 Central Round 5 Preview

The worst kept secret in the NBL1 Central has been finally revealed with DJ returning to crash nine other teams parties but perhaps this Saturday the Woodville Warriors may be able to stop him and the “purchase” the Eagles have made. Here is the preview of an action packed round five of the NBL1 Central…

Woodville Warriors vs Forestville Eagles – (St Clair – The Castle)

Women (6:30pm)

The Warriors have a 2-1 record surprisingly and will be no pushovers for an Eagles team that said themselves they came out not prepared enough against the Lions on Monday afternoon. Sam Simons speaking on the The Hoopsters NBL1 Central Show with Bevo and Downtown Wednesday said the Forestville Eagles credited the Lions for their shooting but knows her team weren’t quite switched on that afternoon. “They came out and played hard as we expected them to, they shot the ball pretty well, I don’t think we played our best basketball so it made it a pretty close game,” Simons of the Eagles told the show. Simons will need to lead her team from the front if the Eagles are to prevent another close one however if they shut down McCarty and Winter, the Eagles should account for the home side.

Key Stat – The Warriors once again lead the league in steals averaging 12.7, the Eagles however have the lowest turnover average in the league of 10.3.

ESPN Prediction: Eagles by 11 points

Men (8:15pm)

Game of the week in my book and an early look at I believe two of the top contenders for the men’s championship. Both teams starting fives will look very different to what they have in opening rounds, the Eagles landing the well-known signing for months of 36ers Daniel Johnson and the impending return of Perth Wildcat Jack Purchase. The challenge for the Eagles will be balancing this lineup and the Warriors defensive minded names of Wurm, Meldrum, Stepney and Jackson who on the first bite could expose the Eagles top looking heavy lineup. With all these star matchups its likely going to come down to the depth of each team across the bench which the Warriors shade the Eagles in slightly, but I think the Eagles may have one too many guns loaded to take the Castle for the start of their season onslaught that’s coming…

Key Stat – The Eagles will have a potential combined 460 games of NBL experience in their lineup.

ESPN Prediction: Eagles by 7 points

5-Minute Read

Norwood Flames vs Southern Tigers

WNBL Past and Present emerge in ANZAC Day Classic

There were heroes from both sides from the WNBL past and present and the present ones got the Norwood Flames just across the line 83-79 over the Tigers at the Firedome. Ally Wilson (28 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists) dropped the last 8 points of the match after the Tigers held the lead 75-79 from Demi Skinner’s deuce. The Tigers had chances but couldn’t put the ball in the cylinder despite former WNBL player Mollie McKendrick dropping 18 points and 8 rebounds and a season high 22 points with 6-11 triples from Jemma Thacker with 5 rebounds. The Flames quelled Yaeger (13 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists) and Skinner (15 points and 4 rebounds) while getting a pair of 21-point contributions from Brooke Basham and Genna Anderson who received the Spirit of ANZAC medal.

Harding and McBride march Flames over Tigers

The combo of Ray Harding and Walter McBride led the Flames to their first win of the 2022 season 82-73 over the Southern Tigers at the Firedome. Harding continued his scintillating form with 27 points and 10 rebounds and along with McBride (18 points, 3 assists and steals) combined for 18 of the Flames 23-11 last quarter points. The Tigers best was Vionte Daniels with 16 points in 40 minutes with 4 triples, 8 assists and 5 rebounds and Machar Machar with a 16 point and 11 rebound double double. The biggest run by the Tigers came in the second quarter 0-12 when they scored 13-20.

North Adelaide Rockets vs Sturt Sabres

Last lunge from Sabres silences Rockets

A last quarter close out led by Zoe Walker-Roberts and Mikayla Williams saw the Sturt Sabres finally overcome a spirited North Adelaide Rockets 65-75 at the Launch Pad. The two Sabres combined for 13 of their 7-18 quarter points, with Walker-Roberts finishing with a career high 20 points at 66.6 percent, 6 assists and 5 rebounds and Williams presented the Spirit of ANZAC medal with 18 points and 14 rebounds. Emily Close was once again dangerous from deep with 17 points with 4 triples while for the Rockets Peyton Taylor led the way with 22 points and 13 rebounds with 5 assists.

Rathjen ruthless as Rockets win third in a row over Sabres

A 26-13 second quarter led by Brad Rathjen saw the North Adelaide Rockets overcome the Sturt Sabres 90-73 at the Launch Pad. Rathjen’s 22 points at 66 percent were the big difference in the contest through four quarters with the second quarter bookended by Jimma Dau’s long-range bomb on the buzzer at half-time. Terry Winn was solid again with 16 points and 8 rebounds with the Rockets finding seven players with 8 points or more. Hayden Meakes off the pine for the Sabres was best in the boxscore with 16 points at 66 percent and 5 rebounds and Jacob Rigoni registered 15 points and 12 rebounds. Notably Joel Spear was brought back to reality with foul trouble and held to single figures after his epic on Saturday night.

Woodville Warriors vs Eastern Mavericks

McCarty steals win from Mavericks in OT

A three-quarter time buzzer beater half court heave from Regan Turnour-McCarty started a Warriors fightback that eventually resulted in an unbelievable overtime win to the Warriors against the Eastern Mavericks 70-69 at the Castle. McCarty played all 45 minutes and could’ve closed the game with a heavily contested layup in the dying seconds of regulation. The Mavs who led by as many as 13 points in the third quarter after a scoreless deadlock in extra time broke through with Chloe Dumesny’s triple answered immediately by Amy Horskins (13 points) who along with another emerged after half time in a move that changed the game momentum.

Renai Fejo was inserted after not playing a minute in the first half and with Emily Winter (16 points and 7 rebounds) and the Mavs Lefebvre-Okankwu (27 points and 16 rebounds) and Gouchie-Provencher fouled out, Fejo’s deadly floater gave the Warriors the lead only for it be tied back up by Olivia Bradley’s (Career high 17 points and 5 assists and rebounds) floater 69-69. It came down to the party of McCarty as in missing her shot reclaimed her rebound and found her way to the charity stripe; sealing the win with a free throw despite Bradley’s last second shot came up short to claim an epic contest which came to life out of nowhere for the Warriors. McCarty stole and clocked her way to an incredible 25 points, 14 steals, 9 rebounds and 7 assists with Deanna Troia’s last quarter impact presented the Spirit of ANZAC medal.

Warriors wear down gutsy Mavs

The Woodville Warriors took care of business comfortably downing a gutsy understrength Mavs outfit 96-60 at the Castle. Devon McGee against his old side once again had an affinity for dunks and points with 22 points and 7 rebounds, Jawan Stepney won the Spirit of ANZAC medal with 18 points, 6 assists and rebounds and Joe Jackson once again double doubled for 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Mavs got some impressive season highs from young players Owen Raneburg (18 points at 61 percent with 5 rebounds) and in just his second game Jamie Kennedy (12 points at 71 percent with 3 assists and rebounds). Marko Miskovic also showed he’s in great form with 14 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds.

West Adelaide Bearcats vs South Adelaide Panthers

Panthers put Bearcats away early

An 8-22 opening quarter and it was over before it started as the South Adelaide Panthers took a 3-0 record in 2022 with a 62-82 win over the West Adelaide Bearcats at the Bearcat Cave. The devastating duo of Olivia Levicki (23 points and 15 rebounds) and Ash “Splash” Spencer (26 points and 4 triples with 4 rebounds) were at it again with the 0-17 run setting up the win in the finish. Abby Brenton produced a career high 17 point and 10 rebound double double while Jasmin Fejo (worn all afternoon by Hannah Stewart) was limited to 16 points and 5 rebounds.

Spud splashes Panthers run

A big-time triple from veteran Anthony “Spud” Spadavecchia gave the Bearcats the breathing room they needed to outlast the South Adelaide Panthers 82-78. Spud’s triple with 13 seconds remaining was supported by stars Nik DeSantis (21 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists) and Nate Sheppard (25 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists). The Panthers were kept in the contest by Alex Starling who also produced some two handed throw downs in his 26 points and 9 rebound effort while Jeremy Smith had another beauty with 25 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Jarryd Hoppo also had his best game in many seasons with 17 points in 22 high quality minutes.

Forestville Eagles vs Central District Lions (Game of the Week)

Simons stops Samuel’s Lions from roaring upset

It took 40 minutes and a career high 40 points for Sam Simons and the Forestville Eagles to stop a Casey Samuel’s inspired Central District Lions from claiming their first win in under four years 78-76. The Lions led at every change in what was looming as the early upset of the season with Samuels 23 points at 63 percent and 8 rebounds and a season high 26 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists from Raynisha Washington gave them every chance of the win. It was the Spirit of ANZAC medallist Simons 40 points with 6 triples, 9 rebounds, 6 assists in the end that dragged the Eagles back into the contest. Guard Meaza Otto had a chance to win it but her shot fell short with 0:06 left on the clock of a long streak being broken for the Northern side.

Eagles take flight once more over Lions

The Forestville Eagles resumed flight in season 2022 with experienced campaigners taking care of the developing Central District Lions 104-78 at the Nest. A 40-17 first quarter led by the return of Spirit of ANZAC medallist Adam Doyle (25 points at 66 percent with 4-6 triples, 8 assists and 3 steals and rebounds) who missed Saturday night’s loss, Malith Machar (20 points at 66 percent and 8 rebounds), Jake Rios (12 points) blitzed the Lions and they never really recovered. Greg Mays also dominated his battle with Tobias Dowdell (13 points and 9 rebounds) with 23 points at 71 percent and 5 rebounds as the starting five finished all in double figures. Nate Deer fresh off U20s AJC topped scored for the Lions with 15 points on perfect shooting and 3 rebounds with Sunday Bol (14 points and 3 rebounds) continuing his good start to the season.

NBL1 Central Round 4 Preview

ANZAC Day NBL1 Central is very special to SA Clubs and has provided some thrillers over the years. Lets look at what’s coming up today and what you can attend for Round 4 this afternoon…

The Flames Walter "Trey" McBride needs another big game if the Flames are to crack their heartbreaking streak of defeats. Photo supplied by Picture IT Sports Photography

5-Minute Read

Monday 25/04/22

Norwood Flames vs Southern Tigers – (ARC – The Firedome)

Women (1:30pm)

Two of the title contenders go head-to-head in a star studded duel of Wilson/Basham vs Yaeger/Skinner. It might take the likes of McKendrick and Thacker to knock off the other Flames key pieces in Akeun and Anderson. Wilson’s experience might just give the Flames the difference as well as her ability to bring others into the game with assists (7 against the Warriors on the weekend); that just gives the Flames the edge at home.

Key Stat – Ally Wilson (36 ppg) and Morgan Yaeger (32 ppg) are the top two leading points average scorers after three rounds.

ESPN Prediction: Flames by 3 points

Men (3:15pm)

I have it on very good authority that the Tigers will have some reinforcements back for today’s game and they’ll need them against the desperate Flames. The Flames statistically have been right up there and the only thing thats not in their column is a tick in the win box. Walter “Trey” McBride and Ray Harding look the game breakers in this one and expect Anthony Green to have a big one after a quiet first few rounds…

Key Stat – The Flames average 81 points per game compared to the Tigers 71; the Tigers are also averaging 21 percent from behind the arc.

ESPN Prediction: Flames by 14 points

North Adelaide Rockets vs Sturt Sabres (Lights – The Launch Pad)

Women (1:30pm)

The front court is where this game is potentially won and the Sabres showed through Nicola Mathews and import Williams they could dominate rebounding, but as has always been their strength is their number of players that can hit the scoreboard with 17 assists in their first outing. Peyton Taylor and Rayven Thomas will get some incoming help potentially from Lily Zbierski in those areas but the Sabres showed their system is still solid.

Key Stat – The Rockets are averaging 19.5 turnovers already this season, the imports have to help the home side look after the ball…

ESPN Prediction: Sabres by 20 points

Men (3:15pm)

The Sabres proved their system is still king but as we know in last season coach Dean Nyberg was able to exploit it and get his Rockets into the decider. Both teams look like they’ll be scoring at a high clip shooting it at over 45 percent but the Sabres we’ve only seen one game which mainly came from Spear and Rigoni. Not much separates these two so its bound to be a thriller much like we saw in Round one at the Launch Pad.

Key Stat – 11 triples at 45.1 percent was a key figure in the finality of the preliminary final result of 2021 along with 6-13 points from 22 turnovers of the Sabres; although different personnel, the impact of this will be evident again in this one.

ESPN Prediction: Rockets by 5 points

Woodville Warriors vs Eastern Mavericks (St Clair – The Castle)

Women (1:30pm)

The form line of these two teams is really hard to draw after a few games, the Warriors are on the improve and the Mavericks won it comfortably over the Lions on the weekend. It seems to come down to the two imports for the Mavs that will be the difference.

Key Stat – Lefebvre-Okankwu and Gouchie-Provencher had 41 points between them making up a huge percentage of the Mavs scoring in Round 3.

ESPN Prediction: Mavs by 11 points

Men (3:15pm)

The biggest question is where are the Mavs reinforcements and will they be ready for today? A big name is about to drop soon I’ve heard but until they are all on the court in uniform, this could be a struggle for the away side. The Warriors have been frustrating to watch but you can also see all the pieces coming together and its likely today we’ll see more of that coming together.

Key Stat – The Warriors average 13 offensive rebounds per game, an area the Mavs will need to be wary of…

ESPN Prediction: Warriors by 30 points

West Adelaide Bearcats vs South Adelaide Panthers (Port Adelaide – Bearcat Cave)

Women (1:30pm)

The Panthers are getting it done in multiple ways and the Bearcats despite their loss are in very good early season form. There is quality across every line with the Jordan Hunter vs Jasmin Fejo matchup looking to be the key one after she caused problems for the Panthers in their last game at Marion in 2021. The influence of Hannah Stewart and Jasmine Simmons may decide this contest through their defence and contributions.

Key Stat – Simmons already averages 2 steals, 3 assists, 8.5 points and 15 rebounds in three games; officially on triple double watch for the season.

ESPN Prediction: Panthers by 7 points

Men (3:15pm)

The Panthers could not have started the season better and perhaps I have vastly underestimated the impact of this roster so far. In perspective they’ve beaten the Flames and an under strength Eagles (now one of the few times we’ll see this season) so this game against the Bearcats doesn’t necessarily tell us anything new about Ninnis’s men. Winning form is good form and with Smith and Starling starting the season inn a blaze; the Bearcats may find themselves playing plenty of catchup in this one. .

Key Stat – Both these teams are in the top three for three point percentage; expect a show of shooting beyond the perimeter in this one.

ESPN Prediction: Panthers by 18 points

Forestville Eagles vs Central District Lions (Wayville – The Nest) – Game of the Week

Women (3:00pm)

The Lions are building and have shown some good signs they are heading in the right direction; already the recruitment of Samuels and Washington seems the right fit and Tyla Bennett looked like a player to keep an eye on. The Eagles however will have too much class in this one and will have too much firepower across all lines. Funnier results have happened on ANZAC day though in the past…

Key Stat – The Eagles have 7 players inside the top 50 point scoring averages led by Sam Simons and Izzy Stratford with 15.5

ESPN Prediction: Eagles by 28 points

Men (4:45pm)

This game of the week is now much closer than maybe when the draw came out. A battle of the basketball minds of Simons vs York is going to be a treat to watch and Dowdell is now “the man” at the Lions; him versus Greg Mays is going to be great to watch. Add to the quality viewing of ex 36ers Bijan Johnson and possibly Adam Doyle, a battle between young guns Tyrone Fui and Malith Machar; This is suddenly shaping as an ANZAC classic…

Key Stat – The Eagles take care of the ball the best in the league averaging 12.5 turnovers per game; the Lions only average 5 in steals. .

ESPN Prediction: Eagles by 5 points
