Round 6 – NBL 2017/18 – ADELAIDE 36ERS VS ILLAWARRA HAWKS PREVIEW

The Fortress will resemble a movie set this coming Saturday night as the Sixers and the Hawks present their version of an action classic, the Fast and the Furious.

CROSS OVER DRIBBLE FLASHBACK:

ROUND 21 1995: ADELAIDE 36ERS VS WOLLONGONG HAWKS

This week we head back to the final regular round of the 1995 season where the 36ers had sealed their position in the finals bracket in 5th were looking to take some momentum into the finals series. Wollongong had come flying through from the bottom of the ladder but a win for them would draw them against a much less fancied finals opponent than the South East Melbourne Magic, so there was still plenty on the line. The opening half was a tight affair as the 36ers led by their guard Brett Maher and “chairman of the boards” Mark Davis took the lead, but champion Hawks centre Chuck Harmison and regular 36ers trouble-man power forward Melvin Thomas had the 36ers only up by two points at the half, 42-40.

In the third quarter the 36ers made their move, in his sadly last season with the club, import Robert Rose came to life to score the majority of his 21 points in the second half as the 36ers took the ascendancy in the match. A 28-18 third quarter saw the 36ers take a 12-point lead into the final change with the Hawks un-able to break anymore than two points into the margin in the final stanza. The 36ers would then move onto to face the tricky Newcastle Falcons while the Hawks would find themselves in a match up against the Magic and after taking game one would bow out of the finals series the first week.

Adelaide 36ers 84 (Maher 22, Rose 21, Davis 17, Ninnis 11) defeated Wollongong Hawks 74 (M Thomas 23, Harmison 18, Lafleur 13) at the Clipsal Powerhouse

Key Match-Ups:

Mitch Creek vs. Demitrius Conger

Creek has had excellent impact against the Hawks in recent times and it shows in his production including his opening 24-point match last season against the Hawks in their gym. The additions to his game are going to have Hawks coach Rob Beveridge extremely worried including an improved clip of shooting the ball which Bevo can’t afford to leave open and his role in the Sixers better rotations through their half-court offensive system.

Conger however is the type of player the Sixers have not defended well against in the past and with an aggressive mind-set and dribble penetration a weapon for the small forward, the Sixers talk off the ball as to when he is moving is going to be crucial to help the front court setup with their bodies on the line.

Nathan Sobey vs. Mitch Norton

We know this is a must watch for Saturday night more for how Sobey will come out with for his coach after the comments made during the week about all. As suspected all along by this journalist, there is simply a situation where a coach is telling their player they need to do more and the player realising that is the case even though the player’s average form is still better than some others in the squad. I expect we’ll see a much happier Wright if Sobey scores low double figures but has multiple steals, rebounds, assists and the team wins instead of twenty plus points and the team suffers a loss.

If I was Beveridge, then I’d be most worried about the impact a fired up Sobey could have in the match. Therefore, I’m sending an antagonising defender in Mitch Norton to him to quell his influence. Norton wore former import (and we note now Kings player) Jerome Randle like a glove over semi-final game two and three particularly lasts season. If Norton can cut Sobey’s influence from the Sixers, the full-court game is much harder for them to execute without Sobey’s lane runs.

Josh Childress vs Tim Coenraad

One Sixer very keen to make an impression in front of his new home-crowd will be Childress and after being a visiting player a few seasons ago, no doubt he’ll welcome being on the other end. Childress is a sleeping giant in the NBL and if as we suspect it clicks either this week or next week we should start to see some decent numbers from the ex-NBA swingman. We do know so far that he is extremely efficient and rarely wastes the ball as his statistics show.

If you are a Sixers defender this Saturday night and you see a number 22 on the floor in a red (or white jersey) then you better get your skates on and close out that three ball. Coenraad if you look at previous matches is in my top five deadliest corner three-point specialists of all time at the Fortress, he is money consistently from that corner. I’d consider him to more of a threat than Forman although careful attention should also be paid to that veteran beyond the arc as well.

The Last Play

Coach Joey Wright can now put aside last week’s away match implosion against United and get back to the business of winning basketball games and the next few weeks don’t come much bigger. A rematch against the team that knocked them out of title contention in the semis then out of nowhere (although sources were very strong in the past weeks it would happen) their NBL MVP will suit up for the Kings the following week in scenes that could possibly (let’s hope a little grace is shown) mirror Mark Bradtke’s return with the Melbourne Tigers after a “European” holiday.

One guarantee is that this game will be fast, high-scoring, very physical between the guards and that the Sixers will be anxious to protect the home court. This will be close and come down to the wire and we might see some overtime action and the most important thing, it’s our first shot at a free cheeseburger on the way home from the local HJs, too bad Michael “Hollywood” field isn’t suiting up.

Sixers halt Kings in royal flush

A 20-point first half spark from an unlikely source off the bench from a Sixers dynamo has seen the Kings blown to kingdom come, 114-84 at Titanium Security Arena this evening.

The Sixers set a few scoring records  in the NBL 40-minute era along the way as the Kings found no answer after the first ten minutes of the first quarter. They went straight for the Kings underbelly under the hoop as they utilised the advantage of Hodgson inside the paint. Both teams traded baskets but after Nathan Sobey who had a barney with coach Wright during the week came off the pine for two triples the Kings burned a timeout 23-15. The points continued to flow alarmingly freely for both sides as Sobey and the dangerous veteran Brad Newley dropped three triples. The Sixers then began to show the muscle and the multiple ways they can score this season once again as Sobey dropped 13 with three triples. The Sixers pushing the margin out and leading 38-14 at the first change.

The fans continued to cheer their team along off the back of the exciting news that their club had signed NBA veteran and former Kings import Josh Childress for the remainder of the season. The Sixers continued to dominate at the defensive end with DJ and Sobey who even gave Cadee the “not in my house” finger wag blocked multiple shots from the Kings. The Kings found some spark from Cadee and Leslie before Wright called a timeout 51-39. In a moment of confusion for the 5000 strong crowd, Creek was the one who dished the alley-oop to Ramone Moore before Shorter stole the cookie from the cookie jar hands of Leslie who then gave up the unsportsmanlike grabbing foul. Moore then scored again ripping Newley out the way with strength in transition and the Sixers had scored the most in a first half in the 40-minute era of the NBL leading by 19 at half time, 69-50. Although most stats were even at this stage of the game, the Sixers held a large advantage in fast break points 14-7 and 34 of Adelaide’s points had come from the pine thanks mainly to Sobey with 20 points on 4-6 triple shooting.

The Sixers begun the second half going to the well with Hodgson making Ellis and Newley underneath the basket look like ants registering 6 points in the first half of the quarter and was quickly joined by DJ and Shorter. Sobey then pulled a party trick behind the back pass in transition as the Sixers continued to deal the Kings difficult hands to guard. Deng then continued his impressive record against the Kings eclipsing his career average against them before three quarter time. Sobey then dropped another triple as the Sixers led by 35 with one quarter to go, 96-61.

The Kings bench at long last held the Sixers to 6 points half way through the last with Indian national player Amritpal Singh and rookie Dane Pineau showing some effort and energy for the Kings. It didn’t matter who the Sixers had on the floor, every player was scoring, making defensive plays and contributing as the home team begun to roll the bench. Former SBL Stirling Senators and South Adelaide Panthers Premier League player Caleb Davis then scored his first bucket for the club as the Sixers claimed their first home win of the season, 114-84.

Nathan Sobey did all his damage in the first half from the pine as he lit up for 25 points at 75 percent but across the game Shannon Shorter was the silent assassin with 19 points at 70 percent, 6 assists and 3 rebounds. Hodgson and Deng backed up their backing from Wright during the week with 14 and 13 points respectively.

Travis Leslie stayed the wrath of Gaze for now perhaps with 25 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists while Newley kept the Sixers on their toes early with 15 points including 3-6 from the perimeter. The alarming thing was that the Kings couldn’t find any other winners across their line-up.

The Kings will need to either make some changes ala Corey “Homicide” Williams comments or work their backsides off at training before they come against the other and gun side of the league in the Illawarra Hawks, while the Sixers take the trip next Friday to Cairns complete with new veteran import Josh Childress. If Childress can stay fit for the Sixers through the season, his rebounding presence and smarts put the Sixers back into the conversation when it comes to who will be left standing at the end of season.

Adelaide 36ers 114 (Sobey 25, Shorter 19, Hodgson 14, Deng, Johnson 13) defeated Sydney Kings 84 (Leslie 25, Newley 15, Ellis 13) at Titanium Security Arena

CROSS-OVER-DRIBBLE FLASHBACK

ROUND NINE 2006/07: ADELAIDE 36ERS VS WEST SYDNEY RAZORBACKS

This week we turn-back the clock to when the current Kings assistant late in his career donned the colours of the blue, red and gold. Lanard Copeland had a night out in this match against the West Sydney Razorbacks which also featured a former Kings star in James Harvey and journeyman Graeme Dann. The Razorbacks led the way early with a 32-27 lead at quarter time with boards master and one of the best “names” the NBL has ever seen in Cheikh Ya Ya Dia dining out on David Cooper and Brett Wheeler early.

The Sixers trailing by 12 at half time 47-59 thanks to the hot shooting Harvey then were sparked in the third quarter by the tandem of showman Willie Farley and Copeland. The Sixers produced a 35-point quarter to blast their way back into the game 81-83 at three quarter time. In the final quarter the skipper Maher came to life and the Sixers gained the ascendancy as they rode the home crowd to victory 110-102 as the Razorbacks ran out of scoring power. The win was one of the best in a struggling season for the Sixers in a season of course where a future Sixers coach in Joey Wright was leading the Brisbane Bullets to some of their own club history.

Adelaide 36ers 110 (Farley 33, Copeland 20, Maher 19, Horvath 12) defeated West Sydney Razorbacks 102 (Harvey 23, Dann 19, McGregor 13, Carter 12, Ya Ya Dia 11) at the Distinctive Homes Dome

Key Match-Ups:

Mitch Creek vs. Brad Newley

Creek had an excellent all-round game against the Kings in Sydney in round One and will once again prove a threat to the King’s crown. Wright may look to play him in the four spot and expose the size of Brad Newley and Todd Blanchfield while also testing the speed and reaction of Perry Ellis and Isaac Humphries, he is the toughest cover for Gaze’s men no doubt.

Newley on the flip side is the toughest cover for the Sixers. His ability to attack the rim but also be a three-point threat makes him a hard man to lock-down for someone traditionally in the Sixers power forward spot like Daniel Johnson. It could end up being a match-up because of this between Newley and Creek that both coaches sacrifice the efficiency of either with probably Gaze less reluctant to have his veteran’s influence quelled.

Anthony Drmic vs. Todd Blanchfield

Drmic has had a blistering start to the NBL season but even he’d admit he hasn’t reached the peak of his powers yet. The consistency from Drmic has been most pleasing for supporters and basketball purists as his shot out of the hand continues to be a pleasure to watch. Most worth silent applause for Drmic is the defensive end that has improved over the local premier league season with hustle and pure will to win each contest at both ends.

Blanchfield looks like already he is back to his most improved player form he showed in his final season at the Townsville Crocodiles. After those lean years with United, he is not wasting time cashing triples and making plays at both ends of the floor highlighted by his top five block shot last week. Whichever of these two makes their triples at a high percentage and make their key defensive plays are going to sway the contest heavily in their club’s favour.

Majok Deng vs Dane Pineau

Sometimes for some reason you have a team that’s your bunny and Majok Deng seems to have the Kings measure. In four games, Deng averages a handy 8 points per game off the pine for the Sixers perhaps with his size and stretch difficult to guard for the defence of the Kings on his jumpers.

Pineau is obviously new in our league but the Kings need a spark from a not incredibly deep bench minus of course now Jason Cadee who’ll probably start for the injured star Kevin Lisch. Although it’s early in the young man’s career, the college returned Australian needs to be expected to contribute much more now after a few games to settle into the NBL.

The Last Play

Coach Joey Wright can be forgiven for feeling déjà vu as the Sixers play two opponents in their first three weeks of the season. The area the Sixers lack in depth currently luckily is not the Kings strength but after two home losses, the Sixers will not be taking their chances lightly. It’s a big opportunity for the Sixers to show they are a top four side early and perhaps consign the Kings to one for the bottom four positions even this early in the season.

Probably for the first time in his coaching career, Andrew Gaze is under some serious heat after dropping another one to the New Zealand Breakers, losing star play maker Kevin Lisch, flying into a primed Sixers outfit and with questions about why former leader Tom Garlepp is playing “very” limited minutes. Gaze has issues with the depth of his team and it’s starting to show compared to other loaded line-ups of the league.

So how will the champion respond in the coaching capacity? I guess we’ll have to tune in, same basketball time, same basketball channel but I have to warn the Kings, the worse might be yet to come.
