NBL1 Central Finals Week 2 Preview

Sometimes its over before it begins and momentum is rolling for sides out of week one. The intrigue still sits however with the incoming impact of the top of the table West Adelaide Bearcats and Woodville Warriors. Here’s the analysis, the key matchups, statistics and predictions for week two of the NBL1 Central finals…

Elimination Semi-Final

South Adelaide Panthers vs Norwood Flames

Women (1:30pm Sunday) – The Jungle

Results this season

Norwood Flames 52 (Anderson 15, Basham 14) defeated by South Adelaide Panthers 79 (Spencer 34, Levicki 20)

South Adelaide Panthers 56 (Johnson 21, Hunter 12) defeated Norwood Flames 76 (Basham 20, Wilson 19, Coleman 11)

Matchups that matter

Jordan Hunter vs Ally Wilson

One of the few Panthers and defensive stoppers that can stop the superstar Bendigo Spirit player who is in the form of her life. The Hunter vs Wilson matchup will be more than just a defensive one with the Panthers desperately needing a kick in their offence with Hunter to hit the scoreboard with 10 or more here.

Jade Johnson vs Brooke Basham

A tale of two players one needing to fire and the other one finding fine form at the right time of the season. There are no more chances; Johnson needs to produce a massive game for the Panthers to stay alive. For Basham she’s cooking right now with an average of 24 in her last two games.

Ash Spencer vs Molly Coleman

Spencer at her best is a tough matchup for the Flames as she proved in Round 1 but missed their next encounter. She embodies everything about the Panthers line-up and simply needs an enormous game as well including a fast start. Coleman has been the perfect piece for the Flames and has come into the line-up and played her role. She’s getting the rewards with 19, 10 and 24 in her last three games and that’s posing problems for opposition coaches.

Key Statistics

The Panthers worrying trend leading into the finals was exposed by the Sabres last weekend. What’s been happening for a month is an average 20 turnovers and giving up 19 assists to their opposition. That plays to the Flames favour as the number two in the competition for steals (11.7) and while the Panthers are number one; they had just 7 against the Sabres last week.

The Central Closer

The form between these two has been quite polarising. The Panthers looked the goods till about four weeks ago and even then, I thought they would still turn it around with their finals experience from last season. It shows though having to change style of play on the fly is one of the biggest challenges for any club. That’s something the Flames have not had to do and right now they are burning brighter. I think sadly for one of my pre-season favourites it might be straight sets in 2022 for the Panthers.

COD Prediction: Flames by 8 points

Qualifying Semi-Final

West Adelaide Bearcats vs Sturt Sabres

Women (3:30pm Sunday) – The Bearcat Cave

Results this season

Sturt Sabres 77 (Williams 15, Close 12, Rigoni 12) defeated West Adelaide Bearcats 62 (Langenbrinck 22, Fejo 19, Rintala 12)

West Adelaide Bearcats 80 (Rintala 25, Utti 18, Fejo 16, Simmons 14) defeated Sturt Sabres 63 (Williams 18, Walker-Roberts 14, Prosser 13)

Matchups that matter

Jasmin Fejo vs Zoe Walker-Roberts

The time has come for Fejo to really put her best foot forward and win a huge final for her club and get back on the radar for higher honours. It’s the Bearcats first finals appearance since 2019 where they went down in a thriller to the Mt Gambier Pioneers; since then she’s been around the Lightning radar. Her all-star five selection justifies her consideration as a key player in this one. Meanwhile the quiet achiever for the Sabres story is ZWR. Her impact is starting to be seen outside the four walls of Springbank and can damage the home side at both ends of the floor.

Jennie Rintala vs Mikayla Williams

Rintala has wrecked the Sabres in both contests averaging 18.5 against them this season. It’s a difficult matchup for the away side on the rebounding front as well considering they still must contain Utti as well. The reigning Halls medallist is the likely matchup coming off another double figure and plus nine rebound performance (13 and 17) her eighteenth of the season (that one was compiled by AB from The Hoopsters NBL1 Central Basketball Show). This matchup will be a treat to watch on the glass with Rintala in the half-court and Williams in the open court. Williams accelerates off defensive rebound from first to fifth gear and Rintala finds different areas in the keyway to expose her opposition.

Abby Brenton vs Emily Close

Two young ones to watch can provide their team the edge. Brenton has had a solid year and continues to produce numbers in key games with 7.4 points and 3.4 rebounds. Close bounced back hard last week particularly defensively in a crucial patch for the Sabres that squeezed the life out of the Panthers. I expect she’ll be back to hitting the scoreboard this weekend as she did their first win over the Bearcats.

Key Statistics

The Sabres are one of three teams to have beaten the Bearcats this season and they did it similarly to the others. All three teams hustled the ball off the red and black with an average of 10.6 steals from the Bearcats 18.3 turnovers. Opposition have also been to the free throw line an average of 23 times. The Bearcats strength has been their glass domination as the number one in the competition and if they can get a hold of the Sabres those potential cracks can be kept shut.

The Central Closer

The Sabres have proved to me their style of play stands up in finals. The Bearcats as good as they have been this season are unproven but as well have overwhelming strengths. I think this one may come down to the moves from coach of the year Tim Shortt and the top of the table Kay-Lee Stuart. The Bearcats also have one too many class players but if any team statistically is equipped to stop the Bearcats; it’s the Sabres…

COD Prediction: Bearcats by 3 points

Qualifying Semi-Final

Woodville Warriors vs South Adelaide Panthers

Men (7:30pm Saturday) – The Castle

Results this season

South Adelaide Panthers 82 (Starling 32, Davies 22, Hoppo 13) defeated by Woodville Warriors 91 (Stepney 22, Humphries 20, Meldrum 18, Jackson 12)

Woodville Warriors 66 (Meldrum 12, Stepney 11) defeated by South Adelaide Panthers 90 (Smith 20, Starling 19, Davies 11)

Matchups that matter

Riley Meldrum vs Jeremy Smith

One of the most improved players in the league has the enviable task for the third time this season. That won’t faze Meldrum who has been one of the few to keep “The Mid-Range Marvel” and the reigning Woollacott medallist and MVP of the league quiet. He’s also done some scoring back his own way already averaging 15 points per game against the Panthers. Smith showed some fightback and despite just the 19 and 20 points the last two weeks compared to his season average; he’s ready to fire again…

Jawan Stepney vs Alex Starling

Both have been able to matchup on any type of player this season. That flexibility has been key to both sides throwing their stars around to counter any type of offensive setup. What both of these players offer up will be of intrigue.

David Humphries vs Sam Johns

The silent achievers for both sides resulted in an all-star five position for Humphries and a huge timely performance for Johns. Humphries will be a hard man to stop but Johns is physically and mentally able to go on the ride with him and provide a painful points provision on the other side.

Key Statistics

The Warriors sat back and watched that inspiring performance from the Panthers but can take advantage of their areas they’ve excelled at in 2022. They’ve held opposition to 79.3 points off the back of being number two for assists (22.1) and number one in turnovers least conceded. Last week the Panthers stole the ball 11 times and forced the Eagles into 17 turnovers; that’s something they’ll need again to do to the Warriors.

The Central Closer

The story has been about the Panthers but let’s not forget the Warriors “Last Dance” is still happening and may have been forgotten. Reigning coach of the year Scott Whitmore will be under no false illusions about the task ahead however when tested when it’s mattered this season; him and his team have come out on top. Until they show they can’t, they still get the first pass to the Grand Final.

COD Prediction: Warriors by 9 points

Elimination Semi-Final

Forestville Eagles vs Norwood Flames

Men (7:00pm Saturday) – The Nest

Results this season

Forestville Eagles 90 (Doyle 18, Purchase, Mays 17, Brine 12) defeated by Norwood Flames 95 (Huefner 21, McBride 20, Lycett 17, Green 16)

Norwood Flames 72 (Barei 15, Green, Webber 10) defeated by Forestville Eagles 28 (Machar 28, Purchase 27, Mays 17, Doyle, Ipassou 12)

Matchups that matter

Malith Machar vs Matt Lycett

The Melbourne United DP got a taste of what the business end of things was like and came up a little shorter than he’d want. With some doubt over Ray Harding clearly after last week’s late mishap; Machar has plenty of advantages over the Flames. That may force the Flames to send Lycett to Machar despite probably wanting him to go to Daniel Johnson. Lycett was a huge problem for the Eagles back in their game at the Nest and can cause equal headaches for the Simons brains trust again.

Jack Purchase vs Daniel Webber

Speaking of difficult matchups Purchase has been just that for the Flames. He’s dropped 10 of 22 across both games beyond the arc and stretched thin the Flames defence. Webber seems the likely matchup all based on the fitness status of Harding.

Greg Mays vs Anthony Green

The two excitement machines for the Eagles and Flames will be key momentum swingers. Mays has proven finals experience and Green also showed a fair bit of substance in the finals of 2021. Expect both to put on an air show but it’s the rim protection at the defensive end that will be worth watching their value for.

Key Statistics

The Eagles were undone last week by some solid defensive work by the Panthers being forced into strange turnovers. The Flames managed to dominate the rebounds to setup multiple opportunities with 43-36 over the Rockets and if they can control that area against the number one rebounding team in the competition; they give themselves a chance.

The Central Closer

The Eagles would be hurting a huge amount after having last weeks game early in the piece and seeing the momentum of the Panthers take it away. It all comes down to personnel for both sides and I think the full strength Eagles will be just too strong this time around.

COD Prediction: Eagles by 15 points

NBL1 Central Finals Week 1 Preview

The finals are upon us and the first week may look to throw up plenty of extremely close encounters including a few that might even enter overtime. Here’s the analysis, the key matchups, statistics and predictions for the first week of the NBL1 Central finals…

Qualifying Final

South Adelaide Panthers vs Sturt Sabres

Women (6:00pm) – The Jungle

Results this Season

South Adelaide Panthers 81 (Spencer, Levicki 20, Johnson 16) defeated Sturt Sabres 73 (Prosser 19, Williams 16, N Mathews, K Mathews 10)

Sturt Sabres 78 (K Mathews 21, Williams 15) defeated South Adelaide Panthers 70 (Sigurdardottir 16, Johnson 15, Spencer 13)

Matchups that Matter

Jade Johnson vs Kayla Mathews

The former Sabre was not allowed to do damage by opposition defenders in the 2021 season so the start to this final series is a serious case of redemption. The formline is very good for the combo guard with 18, 15 and 18 coming into the series. Her former team-mate in Kayla Mathews will be waiting for her to lock her down and deal some points herself having dropped 21 against them in their last meeting.

Isa Sigurdardottir vs Mikayla Williams

Is it worth the roll of the dice on the rolled ankle? In some ways they must although we know the import will likely not be 100 percent physically fit, her presence alone curtails the influence of the woman that could be wearing the Halls medal by Sunday afternoon. The ultra-consistent Williams is a pivotal piece in this game; if the Sabres can get her to got for a double double of 20 and 15 plus its gives them a good chance of proving many doubters wrong.

Holly Forbes vs Jasmin Rigoni

Big time impact is needed off the bench for both teams with Forbes and Rigoni the likely two to influence the outcome. It’s been a quiet build up for Forbes but the numbers are beginning to track north with another double double last round of the season. Rigoni meanwhile needs to fill the void scoring punch-wise with Close, Brazel and Dyer not there her average of 17 minutes are vital that she puts double figures into the contest.

Key Statistics

For a team that lacks the height of others the Panthers lead the Sabres in rebounding by +6 which is the standout marker between these two. For the Sabres their arc shooting of 31 percent is +5 over the Panthers which needs to be considering the number of points they make against the top 5 sides of 72 per game. The Sabres won last time shooting 10 triples and scoring 21 points from 27 turnovers from the Panthers. The Panthers the time before won through the free throw line with 16/22 at 73 percent

The Central Closer

The injury to Sigurdardottir complicates my decision as her influence over Williams is vital in this game and brings this back to a much closer contest than before. I personally haven’t been sold on the Sabres all season and the Panthers form has been of concern leading in. There has to be a game breaker and I think after a quiet finals series last year Jade Johnson is going to put in a huge one and the Panthers will sneak over the line.

COD Prediction: Panthers by 5 points

Elimination Final

Forestville Eagles vs Norwood Flames

Women (6:15pm) – The Nest

Results this season

Forestville Eagles 78 (Hines 20, M Freer 17, Annetts 15) defeated Norwood Flames 70 (Anderson, Wilson 18, Coleman 16, Basham 12)

Norwood Flames 66 (Coleman 19, Basham 14) defeated by Forestville Eagles 70 (Hines 16, M Freer 15, S Simons 12)

Matchups that Matter

Bella Stratford vs Ally Wilson

One of the toughest assignments of the weekend has to fall to Stratford who is one of the few Eagles that can possibly nullify the superstar of the Flames. Wilson is in irresistible form and guided her team into the finals with her last few minutes of play; what she does will deceide the outcome of this one.

Sam Simons vs Brooke Basham

The question for Simons is can she elevate her game to the next level in this final? She’s had just the 10 and 12 points against the Flames this season and as much as it’s been even contributions in their two wins this season; she must go up a gear for her team to get home in this one. The other side is her former teammate and WNBL teammate Basham who knows she’s come up short in a few key patches for the Flames in important games. Tonight is a brilliant night for both players to show what they are made of…

Rachael Hines vs Molly Coleman

The two standouts from the previous two games on the scoreboard. Hines dropped 20 points and was a difficult matchup for the Flames at the Nest while Coleman was equally a struggle to contain in a large patch at the Firedome. What they both do can swing the contest.

Key Statistics

The games between these two statistically have been so close and if one has blown out its been the efficiency of the Eagles shooting from only 65 shots in their earlier encounter they made 43 percent and 71 shots the more recent encounter made 35 percent but also made 17 points from 22 uncharacteristic turnovers from the Flames.

The Central Closer

This is the most even contest of the night and nothing in the statistics or form separates the two. It is purely going to come down to who can swing the hardest when their run is happening. I think this one is going to overtime then as I backed the Flames to go deep into the finals; Wilson will find a way yet again and take them through to the semi-finals in week two

COD Prediction: Flames by 4 points in OT

Qualifying Final

Forestville Eagles vs South Adelaide Panthers

Men (8:00pm) – The Nest

Results this Season

South Adelaide Panthers 92 (Smith 33, Starling 24) defeated Forestville Eagles 80 (Machar 24, Rios, Mays 18)

Forestville Eagles 81 (Doyle 24, Ipassou 17, Brine 16, Machar 12) defeated by South Adelaide Panthers 82 (Smith 35, Starling 22)

Matchups that Matter

Malith Machar vs Jeremy Smith

The salivating match-up of the Mens comes from the recently signed Melbourne United DP (and deservedly so) in Machar and the “Mid-Range Marvel” in Smith. The length and speed of Machar can worry Smith but so far with an average of 34 per game against the Eagles that hasn’t happened. It seems to be the Eagles Achilles claw the shooting guard positions and defending it as well in their losses; Machar has to keep Smith to less than 30 for them to win

Daniel Johnson vs Alex Starling

DJ knows how to do it in big games but so does Alex Starling. The two time Woollacott Medallist takes on the one-time and NBL star and will not be awed having dropped 36 points in the 2014 Grand Final but over 8 years later can he still capture that kind of form we saw back in the early 2010s. DJ hasn’t played the Panthers at all this season and this makes his inclusion a huge boost for the Eagles.

Brandon Brine vs Jarryd Hoppo

The new Dad will be charged up and always comes up big when the finals roll around (just go back and watch his 2016 Grand Final) and will be a key element off the bench or if the Eagles choose to go mobile might even start this one. Hoppo however epitomises the Panthers rise in respect and form; Ninnis has unlocked in him what we’ve all seen he’s capable of and he is the most inspiring of the Panthers for not only his team but the club fans as well who will get right behind them.

Key Statistics

The Panthers have done a good job forcing the Eagles into sloppy ball movement forcing them into 13 and 17 turnovers from 9 and 13 steals which the likes of Smith and Starling have capitalise on. Those numbers don’t compare to the overall ones and standout as keys to this game.

The Central Closer

The Eagles have been raging favourites from the start and after some lean years (A title in 2019 the only one since 2013) under Andy Simons including going out in straight sets in 2021; I think they’ll be keen to get their campaign off to a winning start with the 36ers duo of Doyle and DJ likely to be the difference.

COD Prediction: Eagles by 7 points

Elimination Final

Norwood Flames vs North Adelaide Rockets

Men (7:45pm) – The Firedome

Results this Season

Norwood Flames 103 (Green, Lycett 21, Barei 19) defeated North Adelaide Rockets 74 (Winn 19, Akoh 15)

North Adelaide Rockets 71 (Winn 20, Dau 15, Marshall 14, Harrap 12) defeated by Norwood Flames 92 (Lycett 30, McBride 17)

Matchups that Matter

Matt Lycett vs Terry Winn

Lycett came up big twice against the Rockets this season and his form is a barometer for the Flames. Averaging 25.5 points and 8 rebounds in both games he also has the likely task of taking on Terry Winn who’s been outstanding all year for the Rockets. The outcome of this matchup elevates either side.

Anthony Green vs Jamar Akoh

When both are going they inspire and put on a show for their side. Both are different types of centres with Green the athletic dunking machine and rim protector while Akoh is a back-to-basket body on opponent muscle out type. Both have a strong chance to influence who wins the rebounds and more importantly keep their team alive.

Luca Barei vs Dylan Marshall

Barei has been very solid in the latter part of the season averaging 15.25 points across the last month and provides the spark off the pine for the Flames. Marshall has been forced to step up in the absence of Brad Rathjen’s arm injury and he’s taken it with aplomb averaging 9.5 in the last two games. These two are the future for both clubs and a matchup one each other sometime in the evening is extremely likely.

Key Statistics

The Flames shot an extremely high percentage in both games with 47 percent and 36 percent beyond the arc on average. The Rockets have allowed the Flames to what they will in both games; they’ll have a heavy scout on the shooters in this one.

The Central Closer

Again, this is another one that’s going to be significantly closer and you feel that its going to come down to experience and which coach can get the most out of their players. The Rockets title defence is still alive, and I think Nyberg who has a habit of finding something in his players will get his team across the line despite a roaring effort from the Flames to take it to overtime…

COD Prediction: Rockets by 2 points in OT

Halls/Woollacott Medal Awards 2022 Preview

While the two prime awards in the Halls and Woollacott are always the feature, there are also several other awards to consider including MVP, DPOY, COTY, Youth Medals, Officials Medals and All-Star Fives. Here’s the predictions ahead of Sunday’s event…

The Defensive Player of the Year is likely to be one of the hotly contested awards this season with several worthy candidates in the running

3-Minute Read

MVP

The Most Valuable Player Awards for the Premier League are determined by a system in which each team’s head coach allocates votes after each minor game of the season. After the completion of the minor rounds a list of the top 15 vote recipients is compiled, based on this voting system and sent to each team’s head coach who then allocates 3-2-1 votes to players for this award from that list.

Based on this here is the list of my candidates MVP for Womens and Mens

Womens

Brigitte-Lefebvre Okankwu

In all but four games she is likely to be ranked best on court for the Mavs making her a highly desirable MVP choice to her team and fits the description of the award.

Sam Simons

Potential double possibility of a dual medallist off the back of 13 best on court for the Eagle performances.

Mikayla Williams

Another potential dual medallist with the possibility of 11 best on courts for the Sabres.

Mens

Joel Spear

Again Spear’s value can’t be underestimated to his team and the league, particularly in wins I predict for him to grab best over half of the Sabres games.

Jeremy Smith

Will be getting plenty of threes from the coaches and the value is when he doesn’t have an impact, in the Panthers losses he’s got an average of 20.4 compared to his season average 26.6; that’s a valuable player to their team and the league.

Lachlan Olbrich

Was best on court for his team seven of his twelve games played and a close second in the others. Not only will he poll well in his games; he’s been the standout in his Tigers team this season.

Best Defensive Player of 2022

Womens

Kayla Mathews – Tough lock down defender and has nullified some of the league’s best

Jasmin Fejo – Huge improvement in defensive game and not only steals off her opponents but has blocked several this season at that end of the floor

Bella Stratford – Assigned to the opposition’s best guard and done some quality jobs shutting down some key players

Mens

Jawan Stepney – The steals he’s chalked up have been converted several times by Warriors offence

Trey “Walter” McBride – Gone toe-to-toe with some of the league’s best guards and setup from the defensive end of the floor his team extremely well

Alex Starling – Block parties and dominated rebounding at the defensive end of the floor

Youth Womens and Mens Medals

The Merv Harris (women) and Frank Angove (men) medals are presented to the NBL1 Central player aged Under 21 years on December 31 of the year in which the competition is played, who polls the highest number of votes towards the Halls or Woollacott medal.

Merv Harris (U21 Womens) Medal

Chloe Dumesny – Expect a set of votes in the second half of the season

Maddy Freer – The last three rounds could win it for her

Caitlin Dyer – Huge stretch from Round 12 could net her a bunch of votes

Frank Angove (U21 Mens) Medal

Lachlan Olbrich – Incredible season for his age; the very warm favourite

Luca Barei – Will poll some votes and be a strong second

Fiston Ipassou – Can he net votes with so many other guys around him, he’s been ultra-impressive in his return to the league though)

Coach of the Year

The “Coach of the Year” is awarded based on 3-2-1 votes by fellow coaches at the end of the minor rounds.

Womens

Kay-Lee Stuart – Taken the Bearcats back to the finals and top of the table.

Richard Dickel – Had plenty of things thrown at his team this season and still managed to steer them back to consecutive finals appearances.

Scott Herriman – Taken the Lions back to a competitive outfit all games in the season and to one of their most successful seasons in half a decade.

Mens

Scott Whitmore – A huge reason for the Warriors finishing top of the ladder and has balanced a very even squad.

Scott Ninnis – The Panthers first finals appearance in 14 years and been clutch in his calls from side-lines in red-time several times this season.

Dean Nyberg – Considering what they lost from their championship side, he’s managed to score back-to-back finals appearances and that should be recognised.

Phillip Yuill Medal

The “Referee of the Year” is awarded based on 3-2-1 votes by coaches at the end of the minor rounds.

Women – Danika Shepherd, Emma Caeron, Maddie Shaw

Men – Bailey Dyer, Nathan Davis, Brandon Doctor

All Star Five – These have been selected based on the most votes in their position in the medal with three guards and two forwards per team

Women

Alex Wilson

Jasmin Fejo

Sam Simons

Ash Spencer

Mikayla Williams

Men

Adam Doyle

Jeremy Smith

Jawan Stepney

Terry Winn

Alex Starling

We all wait with anticipation of Sunday afternoon to see who will be crowned for these awards and the prestigious Halls and Woollacott Medals.
