Round 1

Saturday 25/03/2023

Central District Lions vs North Adelaide Rockets (Starplex – The Den)

Women (6:30pm)

It’s a new year with returning coach Joe Noone having a big chance to make an impression early in the season with a first up home game to set the tone for the season. Jayden De La Cerda will be a challenging matchup for any opposition and the new recruits in Imani Guy and Tiahna Sears really add to the stocks of the Lions. On the flip side the Rockets have recruited well and there will still be intrigue if Lauren Mansfield makes it back in time from 3×3 Australia camp – so much will fall onto new import centre Erica Meyer.

Key Stat – The last time Centrals beat North Adelaide was pre 2015 – nearly 8 years ago…

COD Prediction: Rockets by 6 points

Men (8:15pm)

New coaches for both sides and different focuses with the Lions looking to build on their youth development by complementing their lineup and the Rockets looking to relaunch back into finals contention aggressive in the trading market. Brandon Jenkins was huge the last time they met in 2022 with 20 points as was Riley Harrap for the Rockets with 19 points and seven rebounds. Covering the absence of Jamar Akoh is key who was important in both fixtures last year – with new import Donoven Carlisle likely to cover that position I expect the Rockets to have just enough depth to get the win.

Key Stat – The Rockets in 2022 were ninth in average scoring with 79.2 points and the Lions were the same with 90.1 points per game in points conceded.

COD Prediction: Rockets by 10 points

South Adelaide Panthers vs Eastern Mavericks – (MPSC – The Jungle)

Women (6:30pm)

A fitting opening fixture for both sides with South Adelaide Panthers four-time halls medallist Vikki Kelson taking charge of the visiting Mavs. While we won’t learn too much about how much impact the additions of DeFrancesco, Troia and Gibbons – getting off to a winning start should be the priority for Richard Dickel. However with not much intel on new import for the Mavs Jannon Otto – I’d say this will be pretty close till halfway through the third before the Panthers experience and depth takes over.

Key Stat – The Mavs were second in turnovers in 2022 with 21.2 per game with key point guards Kaila Gabriel, Allie Garcia, Emily Dawe averaging 10 games for the season. Taylah Levy at the point is a huge in for the Mavs.

COD Prediction: Panthers by 17 points

Men (8:15pm)

Unveiling the championship banner and a former Panther gets his shot in Daniel Wray are the subplots of this one. My chief worry for the Mavs against the defending champs is how they guard Daniel Johnson and Alex Starling. Jordan Robertson and new import Jack Hemphill are going to have their hands full in the paint with those two no doubt. Unveiling the championship banner can be fraught with danger and even with a former Panther standing at the other end – I think the Panthers take this one comfortably.

Key Stat – The Mavs were eighth in three point shooting and with Legan, Rentoy, Ciabattoni and Raneburg off the pine – we should see more production from the outer from Wray’s men.

COD Prediction: Panthers by 21 points

Southern Tigers vs Forestville Eagles – (Morphett Vale – The Cage)

Women (6:30pm)

The Tigers women have gone bang this week on the recruiting front and while they won’t have all their pieces – they are starting to emerge as a dark horse for the 2023 championship. They have made a change as announced this week with power forward Brittany Hernandez replacing Julie Brosseau and their point guard import is bound to be confirmed in the coming days but their agency has also confirmed their signing. The Eagles main problem in 2023 will be utilising their best lineup when they have it. Izzy Borlase is no doubt the recruit of the upcoming winter however there will be stages where given the player she is – will be called up to higher honours. To note Opal’s training camp at the AIS is between March 31 and April 5 so whether the Eagles have access to Borlase before or after camp plays a big role in how the Eagles play this Saturday. They still have Rachel Hines and the Brett’s but even with mystery surrounding the Eagles lineup for Saturday night – I think the Tigers might sneak this one in one of the games of the round.

Key Stat – Yaeger played just the 15 games in 2022 and clearly had some injury issues. They need her to play majority of this season to control the tempo and flow of games.

COD Prediction: Tigers by 4 points

Men (8:15pm)

Rookie versus one of the regulars when Scott Freer’s new side clashes with a strong squad of the Eagles led by Andy Simons. The combination of Jimma Dau, Fabian Johnson and Anthony Green will be intriguing to watch against the familiar names of Doyle, Machar, Rios on return, Mays and Owen Hulland. It looks like from a personnel point of view the Eagles have the balance right this time around and we should get a first good look at it. I think the Eagles might take this one comfortably – but the Tigers are going to be fun to watch in the mens this year.

Key Stat – The balance of last year’s Eagles lineup reminded me of the big heavy Melbourne Tigers of the mid-2000s lineup – that showed up in the stats with the Eagles number one in the league for rebounds (47.3) however they also allowed opponents to shoot within eight feet 42.5 percent and gave up 73.9 attempts per game compared to the team that unravelled them in the Panthers 67.4.

COD Prediction: Eagles by 16 points

West Adelaide Bearcats vs Woodville Warriors – (Port Adelaide Rec Centre – The Bearcat Cave)

Women (6:30pm)

The scary thing about this opening wild west showdown at the Bearcat Cave – the reigning champion won’t be at their absolutely best. There are still many moving pieces over at Port Adelaide whereas the Warriors coincidently at least have their pieces in place for the first half of the season. You can expect to see familiar faces like Fejo, Langenbrinck, Brenton and Pearce but also the additions of Coleman, Genna Anderson, Simmons and shooting gun Annaliese Watkinson. The Warriors lineup carries plenty of former Rockets with Allotey and Calvert likely to make appearance alongside other NBL1 names such as Chelsea Apacible and Serena Waters joining Katherine Perkas and Emily Winter. The final piece is in place with 6’2 Canadian Nicole Fransson available for Saturday which will make a huge difference to the outcome of this one – but with that in mind I think the reigning champs will be a little bit too strong in this one.

Key Stat – The Bearcats championship formula was built on being the number one rebounding team in the league with 51 per game, scoring team with 79.4 and assist queens with 21.3 per game. They also dropped 46 percent of their shots from inside the paint.

COD Prediction: Bearcats by 14 points

Men (8:15pm)

Both teams had a cracking set of clashes despite the ladder position and now with both teams slated for the top five – its going to go to another level. Bearcats have added some magic in the form of Northside Wizards McCarron and Drmic who I’m sure you already knew were Adelaide 36ers however you can also add a current rookie in Fraser Roxburgh and a former rookie in Joel Spear to that list. On paper Nyberg’s Bearcat team looks strong and has plenty of experience but the Warriors despite some key losses of Wurm, Boonstoppel and all-star five player Humphries – have plenty of continuity with “special J” Stepney and Jackson, Meldrum, Maiorana and of course Osborne. Defence is where this game comes down to early in the season with both teams looking to make shots at either end of the floor. I think the Warriors have had a little more time together and will get the win in this one as the Bearcats continue to gel – but it only take Drmic and DeSantis to go off for it to turn around the other way…

Key Stat – The Bearcats lacked firepower in 2022 averaging 80.5 points per game with the Warriors number two in the league with 95.6.

COD Prediction: Warriors by 5 points

Norwood Flames vs Sturt Sabres (The ARC – The Firedome)

Women (11:00am)

All is going to be revealed for the Flames who seem to have had an “interesting” off season. Exodus of key players, late signings and decisions have been made right at the eleventh hour and still we won’t know the true extent as to how that affects the outcome. It appears Ally Wilson leads the charge for this Flames teams with Demi Skinner and Sharni Thompson needing big games weekly to keep this side up near the top – time will tell if the next generation of youth can make it through at the ARC. The Sabres meanwhile seem solid, with plenty of continuity and armed with dangerous returning players like Tayla Brazel and of course the Halls medallist brilliant Mikayla Williams. I think the Sabres just have had more time together to understand what they want to do and will take them in this one.

Key Stat – The Halls medallist had one key deficiency in her game – shooting the mid-range at 26 percent and the three ball at 14 percent on one of seven attempts – watch out if she’s improved this area of her game.

COD Prediction: Sabres by 11 points

Men (12:45pm)

Similar to the Flames women – the men have also had their lineup shrouded in mystery. While we’ve seen the announcement of a potential star of Collin Smith and some familiar names like returning import Trey McBride, Seb Vozzo and Tom Goodall – some of the star power of previous Flames outfits seems at the moment to be lacking. The same can be said for the Sabres which this match looms as a battle of which team’s junior players can step-up to the plate. Look for names like Darcy McNamara, Robert Brennan and a guy who’s been around for a while that is having a red-hot preseason in Daniel Nash. For continuity and a game breaker in Jacob Rigoni – I think the Sabres get off to a winning start in the game of the week for Kayo.

Key Stat – The sixth placed Sabres of 2022 missed by the barest of margins as number five in the league for scoring, eight in free throws made (63 percent), fourth in score conceded and fifth in turnovers – changing these numbers via their lineup needs to be a priority if they are going to get back into the top contenders.

COD Prediction: Sabres by 6 points

Waatu back together for common goal for University Basketball

This year is the third year of the University Basketball League (UBL) and South Australia’s representative team in the Mens and Womens competition has returned for season 2023. Here’s the wrap of the first round of the UBL for the AU Waatu…

For those new to the UBL league – The Adelaide University basketball team is all about the representation of South Australian basketball at the university national level. “Waatu” is Kaurna language for “coming together for a common goal” which essentially means they are the Adelaide University “Team of success, enjoyment and pride.”

Returning to the court this week – the Waatu commenced their second season with the third year of the league getting underway.

Roseby lights up for MU in Waatu return

The Waatu Men had a tough opening game this week as they ran into a lights out display from the University of Melbourne (MU) from beyond the arc in their 61-109 loss at the Wayville Sports Centre. A second quarter of 7-29 including a 19 point run across the first and second quarter from MU took all momentum away from the home side.

Clark Athletics state recruit Matt Roseby (Bachelor of Commerce) led the way for MU with 27 points including 7-9 from beyond the arc along with nine rebounds and was backed up by guard Josh McNally (Masters of Psychology) with 16 points (4-5 3pt). Cooper Eves (Dip Mathematical Science) dropped 13 in the second quarter to finish with 15 points, five rebounds and three assists and Mateja McKenzie (Bachelor of Science) dropped 17 points along with six rebounds and three assists. MU produced 18 points from turnovers and had 15 points on the fast break capitalising on the Waatu’s 15 turnovers.

The Waatu under new coach South Adelaide Panthers championship player Alex Starling were led by Captain and NBL1 Central player for the West Adelaide Bearcats Lachie Hunter (Civil Engineering) with 18 points and 11 rebounds and the Sturt Sabres Harry Reemst (Chemical Engineering) with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. The Waatu came out after halftime despite a heavy margin and won the third quarter in their highlight of the match 26-23. The Waatu will be looking to improve next week when they meet the University of Sunshine Coast (USC) at St Clair Recreation Centre on Tuesday.

Miles helps Waatu stay in it after Edwards onslaught early

A competitive first half was good signs for the Waatu Women who eventually fell to a potent University of Melbourne line-up 45-75 at the Wayville Sports Centre – with a scoreboard not reflective of the effort from the home side. The Waatu under returning coach of the Woodville Warriors Jawan Stepney were right in the contest at halftime thanks to the inclusion this season of the Forestville Eagles Scarlett Miles (Law and PPE) who helped them to a 26-37 margin at the half. The only difference was a brace of triples from MU’s Ariyel Edwards (Bachelor of Science) early in the first quarter that separated the two sides.

The third quarter was where MU grabbed the advantage as Eloise Leonard (Bachelor of Arts) stole her way to multiple opportunities with eight steals to go along side seven points and nine rebounds for her side as they took advantage 3-22 in the quarter. MU eventually overwhelmed the home side but not without a last quarter fight with the Waatu tying the scores for 16 apiece.

MU grabbed 25 points from turnovers to help their cause but both teams also created enormous second chance opportunities with a combined 44 offensive rebounds given up. Edwards finished with 17 points and five rebounds, Laura Hamilton (Bachelor Agricultural Science) had a terrific all-round game with 11 points, six assists and five rebounds and special mention goes to newcomer Meera Coburn (Bachelor of Commerce) who grabbed 16 rebounds to paired with seven points and two blocks.

The Waatu’s effort was led by newcomer Miles with 14 points and four rebounds and Port Pirie Patriot’s Tamika Reid (Bachelor of Arts) with nine points and four rebounds in an all-round effort from the squad. The Waatu will be looking to build on what they produced this week in the next round when they meet the University of Sunshine Coast (USC) at St Clair Recreation Centre on Tuesday.

RD 1 Men AU Waatu 61 (Hunter 18, Reemst 14, Hunt 9, Nathan, Mollett 6) defeated by University of Melbourne 109 (Roseby 27, McKenzie 17, McNally 16, Eves 15, Wiggett 9, Bennett 8)

RD 1 Women AU Waatu 45 (Miles 14, Reid 9) defeated by University of Melbourne 75 (Edwards 17, Hamilton 11, Sexton 10, Coburn, Leonard 7)

WNBL RD 16 – Lightning’s future may determine Perth push for finals

Round 16 of the Cygnett WNBL is the final round of a rollercoaster first season for the Adelaide Lightning under coach Nat Hurst and much of what is thrown at the home side is now known in terms of the stakes for the fast finishing Lynx.

Who's Next Up?: We've seen a fair bit of Sam Simons in the starting lineup for the Lightning and with a bulk of work ahead for the Melbourne Tigers in NBL1 South beyond the season - will be keen to make a lasting impression on coach Hurst and Clarke heading into the break between seasons - Photo credit to WNBL

STRIKE BACK IN HISTORY

Lightning fly across in historic clash

(WNBL 2007)

One of the quirks of the WNBL was the introduction in the Lightning’s championship season of the Christchurch Sirens – the league’s first New Zealand franchise.

Although the club only lasted one season – current Bendigo Spirit coach Kennedy Kereama remembers the potency of this Lightning lineup as the assistant to Leigh Gooding at the time.

“I remember when I was with the Sirens that the Adelaide Lightning were amazing that season with Tracy Gahan, Renai Camino, Sam Woosnam – they were amazing that season.” he told Shooting the Breeze in a recent episode.

He wasn’t wrong as the Lightning started with a 19-25 opening quarter with both teams shooting over 44 percent and the game remined pretty competitive to halftime with a 33-45. Thats when the likes of Camino, Foley, Gahan, King, Phillips and Woosnam who all lodged double figures took over as they jumped out to a 45-71 lead at three quarter time. The Sirens evened it up in the last across the quarter but the damage was done by the eventual champions of that season as they ran away in Christchurch with the win 66-92.

The Lightning shot it at 51 percent and dished an incredible 27 assists while nailing 46 percent from beyond the arc. Woosnam finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists while Camino collected 14 points, six rebounds and five assists in the games other dominant all-round performance.

For the Sirens – Import drafted to the WNBA Sacramento Monarchs Lamisha Augustine top scored with 12 points, three assists and rebounds and was well supported by Tall Fern Kate McMeekan-Ruscoe with 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Lisa Wallbutton joined them in the double figures with 10 points and import from the Minnesota Lynx Ashley Awkward added eight points and four rebounds in what would go down as their only historic meeting in New Zealand.

Checkout the WNBL snaps from the Lightning’s last matchup against the Lynx at the Lighthouse

LTTM: Adelaide Lightning 82 (Whittle 23, Talbot 18, Monroe 17, Mansfield 14) defeated by Perth Lynx 108 (Bibby 29, Scherf 18, Whitcomb 15, Ryan 14, Atwell 11 Sharp 7) at the Lighthouse

Key Matchups

Lauren Mansfield vs Sami Whitcomb

Mansfield has stepped up in the absence of Talbot and Borlase since the last meeting only weeks ago. She’s going to need to do it again having lodged 13, 14 and 12 the last three games plus added four, four and nine assists. With no Talbot and Borlase the likely matchup she’ll land on is Whitcomb who’s reversed her form since the Lightning match.

The danger of Whitcomb was looming after some other Lynx players hurt the Lightning early. She was held well by Mansfield and Talbot early with just four points at halftime and the Lightning in the contest – but it swung in the third quarter. She dropped 11 points but just the one triple – doing her damage from the layup line finishing at the rim. That yielded a handy 31 point quarter for the visitors.

Marena Whittle vs Chloe Bibby

Whittle you may have not realised actually broke new ground last time these teams met with a career high 23 points. Its actually her highest score since her debut game for Bendigo Spirit against the Boomers in 2018 where she had 21 points. She then topped that against the UC Capitals in the Lightning’s win with 27 points – producing a 25 point average for the weekend plus ten rebounds for the two games. Whittle is in arguably the career form of her life having found her position, groove and how she can get busy offensively for the Lightning. In fact she’s had double figures in her last five games averaging 18.2 points. She’s going to need to produce that again tonight if the Lightning are to score the upset.

The scout on Bibby was well executed in the first quarter last time they met holding her to a donut. The very first minute of quarter two and that changed as Bibby got loose and let reign with five of six beyond the arc for a 15 point term. She then continued to hurt the Lightning big time dropping a career high 29 points at 77 percent beyond the arc. They can’t let the future WNBA look in get another 30 odd points in three quarters again…

Sam Simons vs Mackenzie Clinch-Hoycard

The injuries to Talbot and Borlase have opened the opportunities for the new Tiger to show her wares. With the increased time its seen Simons produce an average of 7.3 points, 2.6 assists and rebounds. Tonight’s the night for her to really unleash at the offensive end especially with the lack of scoring punch the Lightning might have.

If your the Lynx then running some of your role players into top form may be on the priority list. Quietly accumulating is NBL1 West Champion Warwick Senator Clinch-Hoycard. She’s been in really solid off the pine form contributing eight points and has great attributes for the WNBL at 190 centimetres. She’s ready for a bigger role either at the Lynx or somewhere else if opportunity arises in WNBL 24 but for now – she’s a key piece in the Lynx’s depth in their fast finish to the season.

THREE QUESTIONS TO STRIKE ON

Missing Talbot and Borlase – where do the Lightning get their points?

We’ve seen the Lightning for some surprisingly not lack firepower since the duo went down. They’ve managed to still produce 82, 78 and 91 thanks to a combination of Whittle, Mansfield and Munroe.

How desperate are the Lynx to get the double this weekend?

The Townsville Fire sealed the fate of the Bendigo Spirit last night which has seen the Perth Lynx automatically qualify for the finals – they also can’t finish any higher now sitting three wins behind the Boomers.

Unlike last time they met – the need to win is not there however Petrik will want form heading towards an encounter with the Townsville Fire on a hot streak of eleven wins without a stumble.

Who’s the most important Lightning role player that needs to show what they can do in the WNBL?

It’s Sam Simons big one tonight – she has the opportunity to approach this match with a uber aggressive mindset without too much consequence and heighten her ability to peform.

Secondly Ella Batish will be keen to show she can step up as well after less than ten minutes against the Capitals and the Flames.

So who wins?

The Lightning showed they can match it with the Lynx in their previous game for a half and with no games left for the season – its easy to see everything being thrown at the opposition.

Lightning crowds have been healthy back at the Lighthouse and I see reward for the fans tonight coming given the Lynx have secured their position in the finals.

I think it can land the Lightning’s sixth win of the season and close WNBL23 in hopeful memory…

COD Prediction: Lightning by 6 points
