2023 NBL1 Central Round 12 Preview

Important splits are up for grabs while teams just hanging onto their position inside the top five need clean wins – but who will turn up for their teams this week? – it’s Round 12 of the Womens and Mens NBL1 Central 2023…

Round 12

Saturday 24/06/2023

Southern Tigers vs Norwood Flames – (Morphett Vale – The Cage)

Women (6:30pm)

LTTM: Norwood Flames 75 (Thompson 24, Kerridge 21, Wilson 10, Akuen 8) defeated Southern Tigers 67 (McKendrick 21, Hernandez 17, Stasinowsky 14)

Opening game of the night is second versus third with the split only a couple of buckets in it.

Plenty has change since that last loss for the Tigers with the Tigers in at the time #8 in the league (68.2) with 30 percent of their total inside shots coming from inside the paint. To add to that only McKendrick had made more than 10 attempts inside the paint – these were telling numbers. But the addition of Yaeger into this team has swung that around – now the Tigers are ranked #5 for points per game and still #2 for opponents points per game. Its amazing how Yaeger with an average of 20.7 per game has reinvigorated this Tiger team but not surprising. The attempts inside paint is interesting to see too – now four players have over 40 attempts plus for the season. McKendrick has also missed three games recently showing their shaping as the contender to take on the Sabres by season end.

The Flames look set to fire now but having taken care of some teams with them and underneath them now they run of Tigers, Warriors, Eagles, Panthers and Rockets to finish the season. All are still in vital contention but also present a chance to see how far this Flames unit can go. Last time against the Tigers they forced them into 24 percent from beyond the arc and forced 19 turnovers out of them. On the flipside the Flames in their wins this season are +21 in points, +8 in points from turnover and +6 in assists – that’s the Ally Wilson effect but you can add Jada Rice and Jorjah Smith to that as well now.

A tight one to call when it comes down to the line, so I’ll take the home side at full strength likely but it’s going to be one of the games of the night – they’ll do just enough to get the split as well knowing Matt Clarke’s urgency down the stretch.

Key Stat – The eye of the Tiger team in their wins is shooting the three ball at over 30 percent and keeping turnovers to under 13 per game.

COD Prediction: Tigers by 9 points

Men (8:15pm)

LTTM: Norwood Flames 104 (Stanwix 40, D Webber 20, Smith 17, Lycett 14) defeated Southern Tigers 99 (Johnson 36, Dau 23, Green, Logan 13, Thompson 12) in OT

One of the surprise contests of the season the last time they met with both teams taking the game to overtime – but plenty has changed for both sides since the last time they went all the way to the final shot at the ARC.

The Tigers last time they met their opponents were averaging 12 turnovers and concede 11 steals telling you winning more possession in the game was the key moving forward. In their strongest performances opposition had 13 turnovers and conceded 13 steals and shot lower field goal percentages. The Tigers are sustaining their defensive pressure for longer as the season rolls on showing marked improvement in this group.

The Flames have had a good recent run after their last shock loss to the Lions but putting away lower table sides has been a challenge for a team trying to prove they can claim up into the top five. The Bearcats game gives you a good indicator what their peak is – 56 percent from the field, 44 percent from beyond the perimeter, 13 steals, 5 blocks and 18 points from turnovers. The Flames need a good start in this one because if the Tigers get a bit of momentum then we may end up with another tight finish and extra basketball.

My gut says the Flames will take this one sometime in the fourth with one too many additions to this team – but I won’t count out the home side from getting an upset win.

Key Stat – The Flames struggle to get lit up against teams down the lower end with the Flames averaging 9-point margin per game* (minus last weeks matchup against the Mavs)

COD Prediction: Flames by 7 points

South Adelaide Panthers vs Central District Lions – (Mitchell Park – The Jungle)

Women (6:30pm)

LTTM: Central District Lions 59 (Guy 20, Sears 15, De La Cerda 10) defeated by South Adelaide Panthers 103 (Forbes 26, Johnson 18, DeFrancesco, Stewart 11, Watson 10, Spencer 9)

I’m gonna say it – I’m really worried about this Panthers team.

The Panthers have dropped important games throughout the season and are now walking a tightrope – and they may not be able to just fall in this season. After the Lions tonight the Rockets, Tigers, Flames and Warriors await with no guaranteed wins there so getting this one tonight will be important. The key glaring stat is the scoreboard in their losses – it sits at 63.3 per game and is clearly not enough to win games of basketball if your playing top of the ladder defence.

The Lions are in as good as nick as they’ve ever been to take another upset scalp. The form line the last month is 1-3 with field goal percentage of 35 percent and 15 assists. It shows they are moving the ball and making better decisions at the offensive end of the floor. On their given night they can play a full game of defence and like their win against the Flames – just need it all to stick at once consistently. One more gun player on this current roster could move things forward significantly for them in 2024 but for now they are every chance to upset the Panthers.

Despite all that until they do so – the Panthers have a red-hot record over them without even looking at the numbers likely averaging about a 40 plus win against them the last five years. The home side wins but this will be one of their closer encounters they have but simply the Panthers just need to win this one…

Key Stat – The Panthers concede 67.6 per game which is top three in the league but have given up 75.8 per game in their losses this season.

COD Prediction: Panthers by 11 points

Men (8:15pm)

LTTM: Central District Lions 94 (Jenkins 39, Baker 24, Sapwell 9) defeated by South Adelaide Panthers 97 (Starling 35, Hoppo 21, Johnson 17, Johns, McVeigh 8)

Another team needing a win after a couple of bad recent losses is the Panthers however getting back their lineup has been a key aspect to their success this season.

The Eagles confirmed their breaking of the streak with their win against them last week and have highlighted some key areas they may not be quite as much on top of as normal. An additional six turnovers showed the ball security has been a struggle this season.

They couldn’t have played much better last time they met against the reigning champs and only a Star-ling bomb separated defeat and victory. The Lions then were bottom three for a majority of the key numbers but were top three in winning possession through steals averaging 16.5. They are now fourth in three-point percentage (32.5), points from turnovers (11.1), points from fast break (9.1), offensive rebounds (13.6) and fifth in overall scoring with 85.6. They are a scoring machine but are also giving up plenty of points with 91.9 per game – it’s a part of where they are at as a group as Sapwell described recently in his interview on the Hoopsters NBL1 Central basketball show.

The Panthers should get an important win but the Lions are more than capable of grabbing this scalp as well.

Key Stat – In their championship year the Panthers won four of their games by less than two baskets – since that Lions escape in 2023 it’s been one win and two losses by less than two baskets – slim margins are playing a part in their season.

COD Prediction: Panthers by 8 points

West Adelaide Bearcats vs North Adelaide Rockets (Port Adelaide – The Bearcat Cave)

Women (6:30pm)

LTTM: North Adelaide Rockets 89 (Basham 30, Mansfield 20, Zbierski 14) defeated West Adelaide Bearcats 76 (Aquino 21, Coleman 17, Simmons 10, Anderson, Fejo 8)

The Rockets are coming hard now and starting to put together some good form heading into the final phase of the season. Now they’ve climbed to #6 in the league for assists with 12.5 but in their wins its 21.2 per game. The combo of Basham and Mansfield were at it again but for them really to solidify this one tonight they need both Tayla Corrigan and Erica Meyer to fire.

The Bearcats pushed the Sabres hard for a half last week but were overwhelmed in the second half 22-46. Its hard to put your finger on where they are at but as a part of the 7-6 logjam they are still in the race with a run of the Eagles, Lions, Mavericks and Tigers to finish so potentially they have wins ahead if they can sneak this one.

The Rockets are in the slightly better form but Aquino does look a game breaker if the Bearcats were to win at home tonight – I’ll take the Rockets just though overall.

Key Stat – In 2023 the Bearcats average in their key losses are 32.5 points in the paint and 6.8 second chance points.

COD Prediction: Rockets by 15 points

Men (8:15pm)

LTTM: North Adelaide Rockets 54 (Harrap 15, Aliir, McCalop 11) defeated by West Adelaide Bearcats 112 (DeSantis 22, Roxburgh 19, Stock 18, Drmic 16, Olbrich 12, McCarron 10, Spear 9)

Did the stream of this last match get deleted from the Rockets?

Maybe but it did highlight some issues with the defence and conceding high amounts. When the offence dried up after quarter time against the Warriors last week – it showed all be it small gap between the top five and next five currently. It is also with this group their best chance of winning which is a double-edged sword in some ways. Defence seems to be the thing that the Rockets are working hard on as noted but are still conceding an average of 101.7 and rebounding is -6 in losses in 2023.

There’s a reason why I haven’t mentioned the Bearcats much in this one as at the moment they have all the pieces in place, and we are just waiting on what they do at the business end of the season, but they’ll still need to respect the Rockets firepower and athleticism.

The Bearcats should win this one even minus Mitch McCarron but stranger things have happened before in these games.

Key Stat – The Bearcats blitzed the Rockets out of the blocks with 5-26 in the first term and ended up with 18 triples at 44 percent last time they met – fast starts and a good clip from beyond the arc have been a key since that game to the Bearcats record.

COD Prediction: Bearcats by 13 points

Eastern Mavericks vs Woodville Warriors – (St Francis Mt Barker – The Shooting Gallery)

LTTM: Woodville Warriors 83 (Fransson 21, E Winter 18, Perkas 16) defeated Eastern Mavericks 74 (Otto 23, Levy 19, Dumesny 10, Formby 8)

Women (6:30pm)

The Mavs competed super hard against the Flames for three and a bit quarters minus Otto, Taylor and Levy. Despite those players missing with various issues the Mavs have upped their offensive production to 67.8 points – the goal in the last phase of the season is to try and get the consistency up into the 70s to really give their defence a chance to close the gap. The top teams are averaging 60-70 points conceded per game with the Mavs sitting 83.9.

The Warriors are #1 in offensive rebounds with 17.8 but average 19.8 turnovers in their losses. That’s been the key to being in winning positions but also where its fallen over – as Katherine Perkas noted this week on the Hoopsters NBL1 Central show. The Mavs average 43 rebounds per game so creating those second chances will assist the Warriors I think to getting that win tonight.

Key Stat – The Warriors love to solidify their presence in the paint – in their wins this season they’ve amassed an average of 54 points per game there…

COD Prediction: Warriors by 12 points

Men (8:15pm)

LTTM: Woodville Warriors 128 (Stepney 34, McGee 18, Meldrum 14, Janssan 13, Jackson 11, Maiorana 9) defeated Eastern Mavericks 89 (Hemphill 22, Legan 19, Raneburg 17, Rentoy 15)

The Mavs continue to move themselves off the bottom in 2023 in scoring, second chance points (#4 in the league), rebounding, assists (#5 in the league) and most importantly turnovers – in fact they are conceding only the 15.1. The Mavs are still a straight-shooting team in 2023 – they still take a large percent of their shots from the middle three and have made 132 which is #3 in the league in 2023. They are not an easy team to play and have gone close to upsetting a few sides in recent times and could still finish just outside the top five.

The Warriors are still #1 in the league for keys such as bench points, least turnovers conceded (13.5) but have dropped out of some other categories. They have a tough run coming up and need to win this one desperately to keep ahead of the rest – but the Mavs have been sharp in recent times but I’m trusting in their ability to deliver under pressure with experience and game breakers like Stepney and Humphries.

Key Stat – Just like the last time they met – when the Warriors turn up the defence they only give up 33 percent inside the deep paint, 15 percent from the right wing and 12.6 percent from the left-wing triple.

COD Prediction: Warriors by 14 points

Sturt Sabres vs Forestville Eagles – (Springbank – The Cave) – Kayo Freebies Game of the Week

LTTM: Forestville Eagles 64 (Freer 18, Simons 16, Annetts 14, Hines 8) defeated by Sturt Sabres 85 (N Mathews 18, Prosser 16, Brazel 14, Williams 13, Z Walker-Roberts 8)

Women (6:30pm)

The Sabres key weapon is their on-ball pressure averaging 13.5 steals per game (#1 in the league). It’s been unsettling many teams so the team that’s going to be strong against them is the one that doesn’t concede turnovers. The Eagles do give up 18.2 per game on average from their style of play.

In their wins this season the Eagles average 74.4 points, 44.4 rebounds, 13.9 turnovers and 19.9 assists. Against the season favourites in the Sabres last time it was 64 points, 35 rebounds, 20 turnovers and nine assists.

A huge win for the Eagles would prove their credentials and backup the win over the Panthers but its hard to see them upsetting the unbeaten Sabres.

Key Stat – The Sabres are the first team in 2023 to guarantee their spot in the finals this season – does that play a part in the finish to their season?

COD Prediction: Sabres by 5 points

Men (8:15pm)

LTTM: Forestville Eagles 78 (Rathjen 22, Hulland, Mays 14, Machar 11, Doyle 10) defeated by Sturt Sabres 81 (Forbes, Rasmussen 21, Brennan, Nash 11, Smith 8)

The Sabre rebounding and ability to restrict their opposition at the offensive end earnt them the chance for the win last time they played the Eagles and they proved it.

The Eagles on the other side had their offensive ability was slashed by the Sabres through denying ball movement (-8 in assists), denied deep paint touches for scores as well as the wing triples and left corner. Adam Doyle had just one assist last time they played after averaging 5.5 per game in all their wins to that point.

The Sabres are a huge chance here to claim the split and the upset, but the Sabres run after this one has the Eagles needing this one a little more in what should be a terrific clash in the Sabres heritage evening on the Kayo Freebies Game of the Week.

Key Stat – The Sabres continue to be miserly this season conceding 77 points per game.

COD Prediction: Eagles by 4 points

2023 NBL1 Central Round 11 Preview

A raft of Women’s games have plenty of splits alive but it’s the Men’s “Top Six Decides” which will go a long way to deciding the final seedings by season end this weekend – it’s Round 11 of the Womens and Mens NBL1 Central 2023…

Top Six Decides - It's a huge week in the men's draw with six teams all in the top six playing each other - that will go a long way to deciding how the table looks by seasons end - Pictures by Picture IT Sports Photography/Image of Malith Machar and Jawan Stepney by Kelly Barnes/AllStar Photos

3-Minute Read

Round 11

Saturday 17/06/2023

Forestville Eagles vs South Adelaide Panthers – (Wayville – The Nest)

Women (6:15pm)

LTTM: South Adelaide Panthers 78 (Johnson 22, Hunter, Forbes 13, Stewart 12, DeFrancesco 11) defeated Forestville Eagles 71 (Freer 18, Annetts 15, Simons 13, Hines 10)

The Eagles are floating just outside the top six while the Panthers are sitting in third just to be fair doing enough to stay there – but both teams have interesting wins against teams they’ve played this season. The Eagles six wins have come against Lions twice, Mavericks twice, Rockets twice (minus Mansfield the first time) and Tigers (minus Yaeger and first game of season). Apart from the Rockets the second time around and me always counting the first games of the season always as an outlier in seasons – The Eagles need a big scalp to prove they can make this top five. The missing link has been clearly Borlase who’s only played two minutes of the season in a blink, and you’ll miss it moment – but there is clearly some conservative nature with her preparation for the U19 Gems upcoming July 15 with departure Tuesday July 4. There is a small possibility in her preparation she takes the floor tonight and is much needed for the Eagles if she does…

The Panthers meanwhile have beaten the Mavericks twice, Bearcats, Lions, Eagles, Warriors once and Flames once (minus Jada Smith) – they are yet to beast a team above them on the top of the table which could either be concerning or they are still building towards their best. Is tonight the night they do this – I’m not sure but coming out with a convincing performance would go a long way to alleviating the Panthers fans worries…

Key Stat – The Panthers rode the second half of Hannah Stewart home last time – she had all 12 of her points in the second half comeback.

COD Prediction: Panthers by 22 points

Men (8:00pm)

LTTM: South Adelaide Panthers 68 (Johnson 24, Starling 10, Barton 9, Hoppo 8) defeated Forestville Eagles 69 (Doyle 17, Machar 16, Gould 9. Mays 8)

The first of the “Top Six Decides” with two playing four on the table and after the Eagles won their last encounter against the Panthers halting a four-game losing streak to them in 2022 – It’s all on the line for tonight’s second encounter at the Nest. The Eagles have been taking care of business recently but what will sting in recent memory is their losses to the Rockets and the Bearcats – the last top of the table team they beat was the Panthers in their last meeting.

The Panthers haven’t had their full arsenal on the court but it sounds like they could almost be back to full strength soon but will it be tonight? The Panthers have a decent run home after this with the Lions, Rockets, Tigers, Flames and Warriors to finish but no game can be taken for granted. It’s an ideal night to setup the remainder of the season for them with a bounce back win and claim the split over the Eagles.

My gut says the Panthers still have the secrets to unlock the Eagles and with DJ back I wonder who from the Eagles can guard him effectively and whether they can stop Starling twice in a row. The Panthers get this one in a tight one and claim an important split.

Key Stat – The Eagles last time they met crucially kept the Panthers and Starling off the glass with 44-53 in rebounding.

COD Prediction: Panthers by 4 points

West Adelaide Bearcats vs Sturt Sabres – (Port Adelaide – The Bearcat Cave)

Women (6:30pm)

LTTM: Sturt Sabres 87 (Williams 22, Brazel 14, Prosser 10, Close 8) defeated West Adelaide Bearcats 55 (Fejo, Simmons 14, Aquino 8)

Are the Bearcats having a mid-season revival or is it just fleeting having grabbed wins over the Warriors and Panthers with their recent changes. The worry is that the Flames torched them in the final term finishing with 20 turnovers and conceding 16 steals in a 9-27 quarter. Tonight, against the Sabres we’ll find out much more of where last year’s defending champions are.

The Sabres have walked the cliff edge the last couple of games and no doubt someone will get this team in the L column soon – but their performance against the Rockets last round was mighty impressive. Not only that but likely they’ll get Brazel for the games against the top teams before she jets off to U19 in Spain early July. This could be the last night they have her and she’ll be key again along with Williams who destroyed the Bearcats last time.

There’s a slight chance of it all came together the talent the Bearcats have could knock them off but it’s hard to ignore the form of the Sabres – so they’ll continue their winning streak to 13…

Key Stat – The Sabres in their last encounter smashed the Bearcats in pressure causing 29 turnovers and turning that into 21 points…

COD Prediction: Sabres by 4 points

Men (8:15pm)

LTTM: Sturt Sabres 59 (Rasmussen 18, Turnbull 13, Forbes 10) defeated West Adelaide Bearcats 99 (Drmic 17, DeSantis 16, Olbrich 16, McCarron 15, Spear 11, Stock 10, L Hunter 8)

One playing three on the ladder will be much closer than their last encounter in the second of the “Top Six Decides” clashes for the weekend. The Bearcats will welcome back McCarron to make things much more difficult to counter for the Sabres.

The Sabres must address the smacking in every category last time they met but a good starting point would be the rebounding. They simply need to keep Olbrich and Drmic off the glass who dominated last time they met. Sabres are number three in competition for total rebounds per game but number six in offensive boards. Their centres in Jamie Smith and Tobias Dowdell have 92 between them number five and six in the line-up. They need big games to cause the upset tonight.

But the Bearcats are on fire at the moment but suffered a Sunday afternoon declawing which they’ll be keen to erase quickly – a quick bounce back is likely but if anyone can inflict two losses in a row it’s the Sabres top class defence that might just be able to do it.

Key Stat – The Bearcats won every major category when they played the Sabres last time – and shot the ball at 59 percent from the field to add salt to the wounds…

COD Prediction: Bearcats by 11 points

Woodville Warriors vs North Adelaide Rockets (St Clair – The Castle)

Women (6:30pm)

LTTM: North Adelaide Rockets 85 (Basham 31, Meyer 18, Mansfield 15) defeated Woodville Warriors 76 (Fransson 22, Winter 20, Perkas 13, Purvis 11)

It’s seven versus eight on the table but the great divide is potentially here between these teams between the teams fighting for finals spot and those who sit towards the bottom. Tom put it in perspective there are just six wins separating fifth and last – that’s how much closer the NBL1 Central Women’s season has been. The Warriors have been the almost team this season as I’ve said more than once – needing the polish and flair to finish off the work they’ve done in their defence and glass keeping through their line-up. Fransson and Winter are a real key again in this team having controlled the glass last time they met 55-47

Another Rose Gold medallist returns in Mansfield for the Rockets after the break looking to continue her red-hot form before she left – but partner in crime at the Lightning Basham is the one that’s been leaving a trail of destruction in her absence. Basham has elevated to another level both in scoring and multiple aspects of her game. Last they met they hit nine triples and scored 16 points from turnovers captalising on all the Warriors errors – that was the difference between the teams in the finish with a margin of 11.

Traditionally these games have been close over time but both teams will offer up their full-strength line-up for the first time in the season at a crucial junction for both teams. That WNBL experience of Mansfield and Basham will however I feel get the Rockets across the line needing to stay with the top five – and could be fifth with a win by weekend’s end.

Key Stat – Basham’s form line is white hot right now with the Sabres loss an outlier averaging in her previous five with 29.5 points at 61 percent, 6.5 assists and three steals.

COD Prediction: Rockets by 7 points

Men (8:15pm)

LTTM: North Adelaide Rockets 71 (McCalop 22, Aliir 16, Watson 10, Harrap 9, Carlisle 8) defeated by Woodville Warriors 72 (Stepney 20, McGee 18, Meldrum 12, Ficken 8) in Overtime

It’s five versus six to conclude the top six battle for Round 11 with both teams known for putting on a classic with two distinctive styles of basketball. The Warriors grind and go style has come back in drips and drabs but keeping personnel on the floor to make this happen has been the challenge. The Warriors will need all their soldiers onboard but will be led by Jawan Stepney who is and must be once again the general of this team – is going to need a few more 25 plus point games for the Warriors to find their mojo and up their percentages once again.

The Rockets are just that – all out offence and in some ways I’m here for it. The Rockets out of the top six currently are the only team to have given up more than four figures in points this season (1083) but are the third highest scoring team in the league with 1048. It’s a style of basketball fraught with risk and reward but the reward in recent weeks has been felt by Durrell McDonald who’s been amongst the numbers. He’s averaging 24 points at 64.67 percent, 8.3 assists and 3.6 steals in his past three and been a big part of their massive two wins against the Panthers and Eagles.

It’s a game that’s going to decide potentially who finishes in the final by season end if it comes down to splits – this one is as tight as it gets. My heart says Warriors will find their grind and go; my head says the Rockets will continue their explosive ways just.

I must go with the head at this stage – mainly cause that’s where I’ve made most of my predictions ironically…

Key Stat – If the Warriors are to get the win they need to as well get back to their efficient offence that has been a struggle in 2023 – they are ranked sixth in the league with 43 percent and are down minus six in percentage from beyond the arc.

COD Prediction: Rockets by 2 points

Central District Lions vs Southern Tigers – (Starplex – The Den)

LTTM: Southern Tigers 83 (McKendrick 30, Hernandez 18, Beeche 14, Stasinowsky 11, Martin 8) defeated Central District Lions 69 (Sears 28, De La Cerda 16, Guy 14)

Women (6:30pm)

It’s never straight forward with the safari cup rematch with the Lions pushing the Tigers hard last time they met. The difference this time is that the Lions big three in De La Cerda, Sears and Guy are in peak form for the season now and some other Lions are starting to come for the run. Tonight’s a great opportunity for Sarah Deng to break out and do something special – she’s been threatening and if Fejo plays could also be another spark plug.

The Tiger in the room is the return of McKendrick likely after some mid-season management well played by the Southern unit. McKendrick monstered the Lions last time but now also will have to deal with Yaeger and in form Stasinowsky. The Tigers still have to play some tough teams in the Flames, Sabres, Panthers, Rockets and Bearcats – they simply can’t afford to slip up in this one.

That makes me think this one will be even tighter than last time as the Lions continue to build on their win from last round…

Key Stat – McKendrick’s return should be alarm bells for the Lions – she could not be stopped with 19 first half points to finish with 30 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two huge blocks last time they met…

COD Prediction: Tigers by 6 points

Men (8:15pm)

LTTM: Southern Tigers 80 (Dau, Thompson 19, Deng, Green, Logan 10) defeated by Central District Lions 104 (Jenkins 29, Baker 20, Bol 16, Nai 15, Garang, Sapwell 9)

The Lions have a chance to win two in a row and you’d think they’ve scored the ideal team to play against – but as Rupert Sapwell shared on the Hoopsters NBL1 Basketball Show he’s not taking anything for granted. “We are a young team that sometimes plays some ordinary defence and offence” to paraphrase what he said but is well worth a listen back. The Lions with a fourth win can put themselves as a spoiler across the final part of the season playing some disruptive junky defence and difficult to contain offence.

Tigers are much improved in all aspects of their game from the last time they met – and no doubt fancy themselves. They showed plenty against the Woodville Warriors and deserved to get their first win of the season and at some point possibly in the last few weeks in the season – they could be at the point where they are more motivated than the opposition to fill that W column. This is their last game against a team in their bottom side of the table and if the 15-year-old can turn it on again in Alex Dickeson and the rest can ride the enthusiasm – you just never know.

But I think the defining factor is Branden Jenkins who I feel will find a way to muscle this side across the line – just…

Key Stat – The Lions broken them game open in the second half by clocking 15 steals and scoring 19 points from turnover against the tyro Tigers.

COD Prediction: Lions by 3 points

Sunday 18/06/2023

Norwood Flames vs Eastern Mavericks – (The ARC – The Firedome) – Kayo Freebies Game of the Week

LTTM: Eastern Mavericks 77 (Otto 20, Levy 17, Bradley, Formby 15, Dumesny 8) defeated by Norwood Flames 94 (Thompson 32, Wilson 19, Kerridge 18, Akuen 17)

Women (3:30pm)

A Sunday afternoon matinee worth your time to view and potentially a huge homecoming for a rose gold medallist.

The Flames are setting themselves to run the table as many have predicted – with Wilson now all clear for the run home against the Tigers, Warriors, Eagles, Panthers and Rockets to finish can stamp their claim with a convincing home performance against the Mavs.

Don’t write off the Eastern Mavericks thought who have been steadily building through the season and have enough talent on their roster to cause opposition problems a plenty. Putting scoreboard pressure on the Flames is the key having only averaged 67.4 per game and given up 83 points per game – they also need to increase their output in moving the ball with 13.8 assists per game.

The Flames were impressive without Wilson against the Bearcats, and you’d expect them to chalk up an important home win to keep with the race for the top five – no slip ups here this one…

Key Stat – The Flames recent rise does coincide with the recruiting of centre Jada Rice – with her and Alek Akuen averaging 7.5 rebounds per game in their wins.

COD Prediction: Flames by 18 points

Men (5:15pm)

LTTM: Eastern Mavericks 70 (Hemphill 14, Robertson 13, Rentoy 12, Legan 11) defeated by Norwood Flames 95 (Nuangki, Stanwix 16, Smith 15, McNamara, Webber 12, Lycett 11, Goodall 8)

A contest that could be closer than most expect with an opportunity for both teams to sneak closer to the top five.  The Flames are coming off a roasting of the Bearcats but for a team with plenty of fire – they’ve been very hot and cold this season. Beating the top side was preceded by dropping to a lower table side the night before you’re just not sure if they are there abouts this season. Isaac Miller-Jose is a handy addition but there’s been plenty of pieces thrown together late for this outfit.

The Mavs are the different story with a well-gelled team that are battling hard, they are having one of their best seasons in the past five years already meaning they still have plenty of say in shaping the final makeup of the table. There’s a potential set of wins ahead of this one with the Warriors, Lions and Rockets up next if they can score this upset – a record of 7-9 with two games left in the season is an improbable yet possible run but they would have to nail this one to stoke the momentum.

Late Sunday afternoon games are always known for throwing up the upset – its out of the usual Saturday routine for both teams and I just get the feeling the Mavs have been building in their past two games playing some high-quality patches. I think they’ll string it together and get the unlikely upset in this one.

Key Stat – In the Flames losses this season they’ve given up an extra four assists to their opposition and two extra steals per game – it’s not much but it’s been costly in close losses – three within a couple of baskets.

COD Prediction: Mavericks by 3 points

On 2023 NBL1 Central All-Star Weekend – if it happened…

Thanks to an idea from Downtown Allan Browne and our NBL1 Central Commentary Crew two years ago, it’s time once again to pick our players for an all-star weekend, here’s my picks in a much deeper talent pool for 2023…

These lineups would be something to behold and showcase the best the league has to offer to the rest of the nation. Pictures by Picture IT Sports Photography and NBL1

3-Minute Read

My format would be as so in the form of four games across the weekend with the North taking on the South clubs with two different selections. Each club must have at least one nomination suit up for their respective conference all-star team.

North (Central District Lions, North Adelaide Rockets, Norwood Flames, West Adelaide Bearcats and Woodville Warriors)

South (Southern Tigers, South Adelaide Panthers, Sturt Sabres, Eastern Mavericks and Forestville Eagles)

  • NBL1 Central All-Stars (Mens and Womens)
  • NBL1 Central Rising-Stars (Mens and Womens born after 2002)
  • NBL1 Central Three-Point Stars (Four of the best from the league, Mens and Womens: can be an all-star player)
  • NBL1 Central All-Stars Skills Comp (Four of the best from the league, Mens and Womens: must not be in all-star game)

Here is my list of the above I’d nominate from the clubs in a three guard and two forward selection

*Denotes second year all-star

North All-Stars (Women) – coached by Brenton Johnston

Guard – Lauren Mansfield (Rockets)

Guard – Brooke Basham* (Rockets)

Guard – Ally Wilson* (Flames)

Forward – Nicole Fransson (Warriors)

Forward – Tiahna Sears (Lions)

Guard – Jasmin Fejo* (Bearcats)

Guard – Jaedyn De La Cerda (Lions)

Guard – Sharna Thompson (Flames)

Forward – Molly Coleman (Bearcats)

Forward – Katherine Perkas (Warriors)

This team was one of the toughest to pick in 2023 with an enormous amount of talent at the guard positions particularly – in the end you couldn’t ignore that starting lineup is pretty much almost WNBL quality. The trio of Mansfield, Basham and Wilson is a dangerous combo for North with Lions forward Sears providing some huge punch from one of the forward positions and Fransson hauling in big boards and inside paint work.

The bench is just as star studded and tough with a second appearance from Fejo and De La Cerda keeping the quality up in rotations. Thompson is a star shooter that can come in and impact and then the toughness of Coleman and reward for an underrated season for Perkas to back up Fransson and Sears.

Superstar Ally Wilson naturally did enough to earn selection for the COD North All-Stars for a second straight season.

South All-Stars (Women) – coached by Tim Shortt

Guard – Jordan Hunter (Panthers)

Guard – Tayla Brazel (Sabres)

Guard – Maddy Freer (Eagles)

Forward – Mollie McKendrick (Tigers)

Forward – Mikayla Williams* (Sabres)

Guard – Tayla Levy (Mavericks)

Guard – Morgan Yaeger* (Tigers)

Guard – Olivia Bradley (Mavericks)

Forward – Holly Forbes (Panthers)

Forward – Rachel Hines (Eagles)

The South side is an assist and stealing machine in setting up its key scorers in the front court in McKendrick and reigning Halls medallist Williams. The nightmare of encountering Hunter, Brazel up the top of the arc with Freer to space the floor rounds out the starting five. It was tough not having the next lot of guards start in this lineup but purely for balance and only cause Yaeger started this season a little later due to injury does she come off the pine.

Levy and Yaeger backup Hunter and Brazel to continue the defensive strength while by adding Bradley (rising star team 2022) adds some potency to the scoring punch of the back court. Front court has some rebounding power and punch from the pine with first timers Forbes and Hines rounding out a strong south lineup.

The Brilliant Sabres pairing of Mikayla Williams and Tayla Brazel (pictured) would feature in the starting five for the COD South All-Stars

North All-Stars (Men) – coached by Dean Nyberg

Guard – Mitch McCarron (Bearcats)

Guard – Branden Jenkins* (Lions)

Guard – Anthony Drmic (Bearcats)

Forward – Koop McCalop* (Rockets)

Forward – Lachlan Olbrich* (Bearcats)

Guard – Jawan Stepney* (Warriors)

Guard – Jack Stanwix (Flames)

Guard – Riley Harrap (Rockets)

Forward – Akech Aliir (Rockets)

Forward – Kevin Baker (Lions)

An NBL quality starting five is what you’re looking at for North with three Bearcats making the starting five rounded out by McCalop and Jenkins two scoring and defensive machines.

The back up is just as strong with match winners in Stepney, Stanwix and Harrap bringing the carnage and Aliir and Baker I’ve rewarded for consistent form across the front court. One of the big strengths of this team is the outside arc of the bigs with all of them able to stretch the floor with their shooting.

A full season for Branden Jenkins has seen him grab his first COD all-star selection in the North team

South All-Stars (Men) – coached by Andy Simons

Guard – Adam Doyle* (Eagles)

Guard – Jordan Forbes (Sabres)

Guard – Malith Machar (Eagles)

Forward – Daniel Johnson* (Panthers)

Forward – Alex Starling* (Panthers)

Guard – Jasper Rentoy (Mavericks)

Guard – Jacob Rigoni* (Sabres)

Guard – Apiok “Jimma” Dau (Tigers)

Forward – Greg Mays (Eagles)

Forward – Jack Hemphill (Mavericks)

The starting five for the South team can lead the way with plenty of its own NBL experience in Doyle, Machar and Johnson with newly minted Sixer Starling and one of the recruits of the year in Forbes.

The bench looks high quality coming in with plenty of ability to win the glass as well as keep the scoreboard ticking over. Its great to see some players of previous seasons win their positions after consistent seasons like Dau and Mays. The Eagles win three selections in this year’s lineup showing their starting five has been a big part of their current second place positioning.

North Rising Stars (Women) – coached by Will Smith

Guard – Ashalea Perry (Warriors)

Guard – Grace Facchini* (Rockets)

Guard – Sarah Deng* (Lions)

Forward – Abby Brenton* (Bearcats)

Forward – Lily Zbierski* (Rockets)

Reserve – Sienna Grieger (Bearcats)

Reserve – Annika Uzcategui Montenegro (Flames)

A youthful lineup led by second year returnees in Brenton, Deng, Facchini, Zbierski – features a look into the future. Perry, Grieger and Uzcategui are those who’ve had a taste at senior level and would be great to see in a showcase like this.

The North Rising Stars has some new players coming through that have had their opportunity to shine in 2023 like Annika Uzcategui Montenegro for the Flames

South Rising Stars (Women) – coached by Matt Clarke

Guard – Jess Simons* (Eagles)

Guard – Emily Close* (Sabres)

Guard – Margot Hall* (Tigers)

Forward – Bianca Stasinowsky (Tigers)

Forward – Stephanie Formby (Mavericks)

Reserve – Mia Walker-Roberts (Sabres)

Reserve – Alannah Morello (Eagles)

The DBG duo has returned – the designated bucket getters led by the shooting of Close and Simons. Hall is a starter this year followed by strong seasons from Stasinowsky, Formby, Walker-Roberts and Morello getting the nod in this year’s edition.

Steph Formby (pictured top left) has stepped up into a young Mavericks lineup and earnt another rising star nomination for the COD South Rising Stars team.

North Rising Stars (Men) – coached by Scott Whitmore

Guard – Kalani Sapwell (Lions)

Guard – Sean Stock (Bearcats)

Guard – Cooper Osborne* (Warriors)

Forward – Fraser Roxburgh (Bearcats)

Forward – Magok Manyang (Lions)

Reserve – Alex Dodson (Flames)

Reserve – Steve Parfitt* (Rockets)

Plenty of this lineup have taken another step in their development in 2023 with first time appearances from Sapwell, Stock, Roxburgh, Manyang (second appearance but unlucky to be pushed out of his 2022 All-Star position by a strong North conference) and Dodson. Parfitt and Osborne’s second appearances continue to show the important minutes in strong teams they will have in their future roles in coming seasons. The all-roundness of this side would be exciting to see on the floor.

Fraser Roxburgh is a hot talent plucked from junior high school in Victoria ending up on the Adelaide 36ers DP roster in NBL23 – and rightly claims a spot in the best U21 players in the North.

South Rising-Stars (Men) – coached by Scott Ninnis

Guard – Jett Thompson (Tigers)

Guard – Keanu Rasmussen (Sabres)

Guard – Lloyd McVeigh (Panthers)

Forward – Stefan Gould (Eagles)

Forward – Jamie Smith* (Sabres)

Reserve – Owen Raneburg* (Mavericks)

Reserve – Alex Dickeson (Tigers)

The talent the under 21 in South team has changed dramatically with six of the seven players all starting in their teams at some time in season 2023. An incredibly strong back court and backup to the back court features in this lineup with a lineup that actually makes you question if they are under 21 with the skills they bring to the floor.

NBL1 Central Three-Point Shooting Stars

Womens: Morgan Yeager (44.4 percent for the Tigers), Abby Beeche (42.3 percent for the Tigers), Alannah Morello (40.7 percent for the Eagles), Jade Johnson (40.6 percent for the Panthers), Brooke Basham (40.3 percent for the Rockets)

Womens: Kayla Mathews (Sabres), Sophie Kerridge (Flames), Mariah Martin (Tigers) and Tia Bails (Rockets)

Mens: Sam Daly (Sabres), Sunday Bol (Lions), Trey McBride (Flames) and Fabian Johnson (Tigers)

Well I guess its time to debate and decide your lineup and who would win with these teams…
